Hi all.
Does anyone have any pointers on converting a 3D bluray to DCP? The
bluray which is the source in this case has the 3D encoded as MVC. From
my reading, this means the right eye picture is encoded as a separate
stream (which is a delta from the left eye).
Have ripped the bluray with MakeMKV which recognises that it's an MVC-3D
stream. And the file it outputs appears to be the right size so I think
MakeMKV is not dropping the extra stream or something like that.
But I haven't found any software that can display both eyes at present.
DCP-o-matic doesn't see it, and nor does Bino 3D player or VLC.
I'm on Mac but can get hold of a Windows box if I need to.
Anyone encountered this before?
Many thanks,
Jim
Hi all,
I hope everyone is doing well. I uploaded a pre-release of DCP-o-matic
2.18.0 to
https://dcpomatic.com/test-download
If anybody would like to do some final testing, it would be much
appreciated. I am also happy to add translation updates, if you have
any pending.
Kind regards and best wishes,
Carl

Hello!
Is it by design the bandwidth for a new film always reverts to 150 Mbps, even if I
change it to say 200 ? Otherwise, it would improve workflow for multiple DCPs if that value persisted across films.
Thanks,
Aaron
Hi all,
Does anyone have access to EasyDCP 4.1, who would be willing to run some
tests? I'm hearing about some QC failures that come from certain
companies using EasyDCP as their QC tool.
All the best,

Hi all.
Would anyone who has access to the Barco certificates database have time
to pull some certificates for me?
Or does anyone know who to email at Barco to request to be given access
to their database? Their website is rather opaque.
These are chain cinemas with no projection staff so unfortunately its
not as easy as asking the projectionist to export certs from the
projectors, and the shows are on Friday...
The servers I'm trying to create KDMs for are:

Hi all.
First posting on this list since Carl mentioned possibly shutting it
down. Perhaps it's had a chilling effect on public discourse!
A question for the font of knowledge...
I believe there's meant to be a limit on the size of a subtitles XML
file in a DCP of 256KB. i.e. for most features, the DCP needs to be cut
into reels to avoid exceeding this limit if there are soft subs.
However in practice we receive many features with subtitles as
single-reel DCPs (though Deluxe etc still seem to use multiple reels).
When making a DCP which is intended to screen widely, is it wise to
stick to multiple reels? Or was this limitation purely for the benefit
of series 1 projectors which are now mostly extinct?
If anyone has any practical experience of this (especially any
projectors where this limit does still apply), that info would be hugely
helpful.
Jim
Hi all,
I have been thinking for a while about switching off these mailing lists
(users and announce) and just leaving the archives on the web site.
For some time there has been very little traffic, and the messages we do
get are usually from people who don't sign up to the list first, making
it fiddly to reply to them properly
It just seems like most people don't really get the "mailing list"
concept any more and are more comfortable on the forum.
Does anybody have any thoughts/strong feelings about that?
All the best,
Carl
Hey Carl!
First I want to thank you from my heart, it means a lot for me to show my first movie on the big screen.
I rendered the DCP successfully but now I want to copy it on the HDD and have a Problem, can you help me?
After agreeing with „I am sure“ and „Yes“ I clicked on „Copy DCP“ but Nothing happens, can you please help me? On Tuesday I have to be finish with the DCP :(
All the best and thank you so much for Response!

I am not good at using your software, I downloaded a trailer according to the online tutorial to make MP4 DCP format, everything was correct when making, and the warm prompt reminded me that everything was ok. When I created the exported DCP, I went to the player to check, and it dropped frames when playing. I didn't know where the problem was and how to solve it.
Hi Carl,
Thanks for the almost instantaneous response. You are correct. I am
trying to make a DCP. Attached is the log for the project.
Sent from Mail <https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=550986> for Windows
Hi Carl,
I just wanted to congratulate you on your DCP project - I love it and I'm
sure many others do as well. I rarely have the need to create to DCP files
but there is a special documentary project I've just completed that is set
to screen in a cinema here in Brisbane, Australia and I intend to use DCP
O'Matic. I've made a donation.
My question is about audio and I've included two screenshots attached here
as reference. In one of the shots 'WITH' I have applied the Mid Side decoder
and I see it turns off the 6 boxes that control the speakers and keeps only
left and right. Is this the correct way to apply what you describe as the MS
Processor to achieve some centre speaker effect in the cinema? And should I
change the channels from 6-5.1 to 2 channels - or 3 or 4?
In the 2nd screenshot 'WITHOUT' I did not turn on the Mid Side decoder but
instead added -12db to the centre speaker boxes shown in the screenshot.
Will this achieve the same or similar result as adding the MS processor (or
mid side decoder as it called on the software.) Would -12db be about the
equivalent to the automatic mid side decoder setting or should I make it
-6db or even -3db? I can see the graphs are very different.
By using the six content speaker boxes I could make an imitation 5.1 mix by
experimenting with these settings?
Thank you for your help.

Hi,
sorry if already mentioned.
Seems like audio processors have gone away in DoM 2.16.8
Only left is « half channel / demi canal » and it no longer works as it
used to ( nothing in rear and LF ).
I did not dig - maybe it's my installation.
I often use the « phase inversion » one, kind of pro-logic… maybe I was
the only one, lol.
Best regards,
Gérald.
Hello,
Could you please help me why I get this error while trying to add OV on dcp
matic player. I have made VF package with dcp matic. This is the first time
I face this error.
Hi all,
I hope everyone is doing well. DCP-o-matic 2.16.0 is hopefully (really
this time) nearly ready for release; there's just one showstopper
(failure of DCPs on some Sonys), which I think I have a fix for, and
which needs some testing.
If anybody has time to help with updating translations, now would be a
great time!
https://dcpomatic.com/i18n
shows the current state of things. Let me know if there's anything I
can do to make your translation experience easier.
All the best,
Carl
Hi all,
I recently updated the mailing list software (mailman) from version 2 to

Good evening from Berlin!
I am pleased to say that the release of DCP-o-matic 2.16.0 is soon
approaching.
2.16.0 brings some useful new features and improvements over the 2.14.x
series:
- Linux-formatted DCP drives can be written from macOS or Windows using
the Disk Writer.
- Player performance is improved.
- DCPs can be combined using the Combiner.
- The DCP verifier built into the player is much improved.
- A number of new SMPTE DCP features are supported (CPL metadata,
markers etc.)
- Full support for Apple Silicon (M1) processors.
- Subtitle export.
...and lots of other good stuff:
https://dcpomatic.com/release-notes.php?v=2.15.175
We are now in the final testing phase with version 2.15.175 (also
known as beta 8). If no show-stopping bugs are found, I will release
2.16.0 within the next week or two.
If you have any time to help with the release, that would be great!
The important
work now is:
* TESTING - making DCPs, playing them back, writing DCP drives
using the disk writer - whatever you can, on whatever machines
(Windows, macOS, Linux) you have available. Report any bugs,
errors or confusions you find in whichever way is most
convenient for you:
- by email to carl(a)dcpomatic.com
- on the bug tracker https://dcpomatic.com/mantis
- on the forum https://dcpomatic.com/forum
- twitter @dcpomatic
* TRANSLATION --- here https://dcpomatic.com/i18n you can see the
current state of the translations of DCP-o-matic from English to a variety of
other languages. Are you a fluent speaker of a language that is coloured
yellow or red on that list? If so, it would be great if you could help by
translating some or all of DCP-o-matic's untranslated strings. If you need help
with that, or don't know where to start, do get in touch via carl(a)dcpomatic.com !
As always you can download the current test version from
https://dcpomatic.com/test-download
A huge thanks to everyone for your continued support.
All the best,
Carl
We had a very strange problem with a short DCP this week at a multiplex
cinema with Sony projectors.
The DCP was made with DOM 2.14.54. It was 2K Flat, SMPTE, unencrypted,
25fps. It was 2 mins long.
The DCP was due to play in 3 different screens. In one screen, it played
fine. In the other 2 screens, the same DCP ingested fine but then failed
at the "validation" stage.
In one of these screens, after repeated attempts, the DCP did finally
validate, but then wouldn't play (as in when you pressed the "play"
button, nothing happened).
The same cinema has in the past week successfully played other SMPTE
DCPs made with exact same version of DOM and same specs (2K Flat, SMPTE,
25fps, unencrypted).
All three screens have Sony projectors. As usual with these kinds of
things, I have of course tried to find out the model number of
projectors, firmware version etc but am unable to extract this
information from the cinema staff, who are rushed off their feet.
A couple of questions:
1. I had understood that this issue was resolved a couple of years ago.
https://dcpomatic.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1214
Has anyone else seen validation fails on Sony projectors since DOM 2.14.x?
2. What even is "SMPTE validation" anyway?
My understanding of "validation" is that it's a content integrity check
(hash check etc). However, I thought that happened at time of ingest and
ingest would fail if hash check fails. This problematic DCP is ingesting
OK, but then fails later at "validation".
"Validation", I am told, takes a long time (1 hour or so for a feature)
and can only be run when the projector is not playing anything. That
suggests it is reading a lot of data from disk. Again, that sounds like
a hash-check.
However, the cinema said their projectors only perform this extra
validation for SMPTE DCPs, not Interop.
So, if validation means what I think it does, why are Interop DCPs not
being hash-checked? Or if "validation" means something else entirely,
what on earth is it?
I hope someone else may be able to shed some light on these mysterious
events!
Jim
Hi all,
Does anyone have issues generating KDMs for this server?
Any kind of KDM generated with DOM or easyDCP KDM Generator is rejected in
a cinema.
I had to tweak cinemaslides removing "DeviceListDescription" line on mt1
KDM to get it working and make the KDM identical than Waimea does.
Thanks for your help.
Lilian
Hi all.
This list has been quiet for a while...
Quick question: DCP-o-matic applies gamma correction when making a DCP
from a ProRes. When using "Export" to convert a DCP back to ProRes, does
DOM apply gamma correction in opposite direction? If so, to what? 2.4 or
2.2?
Jim
Hi Carsten,
Good day. I exported a DCP wonderfully made by dcp-o-matic to ProRes, and while it was perfect in the cinema testing, the ProRes export has extremely low audio. Audio in the cinema was perfect. Any possible issues are something I'm overlooking during export?
Thanks

Hi all,
I've had a bug report that DoM-encrypted DCPs don't play on EasyDCP
player. Has anybody tried that? Or does anybody have access to EasyDCP
player to try it?
Unfortunately the demo won't play back encrypted content as far as I can
see.
I hope everyone is doing OK!
Best,
Carl
Hi all.
This question is probably mostly for Carl, but thought I'd post it here
in case answer is of use to anyone else.
We use a setup with one "master" DCP-o-matic instance and other machines
on network running the Encode Server.
We mostly use 2.14.x but occasionally need to use the 2.15.x test
version for some strnage cases which require extra features only
available in DCP-o-matic test version.
Is the 2.15.x test version of DOM compatible with 2.14.x Encode Servers?
i.e. if we want to encode a DCP using the test version, do we need to
also switch to 2.15.x Encode Servers during that encode, or will stable
branch 2.14.x Encode Servers play nicely with a master running 2.15.x?
I'm less concerned about whether 2.15.x will use the power of the 2.14.x
Encode Servers, than whether there's any chance of an incompatibility
between 2.14.x and 2.15.x master and encoders causing glitches in the
encode.
Hope you can help.
Many thanks,
Jim
Hi all,
I have a new version of DCP-o-matic here:
https://dcpomatic.com/rc-download
There have been some bug fixes, but more importantly this version is built
against a newer version of the macOS SDK than previous versions, and has a
number of changes to comply with changes in Apple's notorization
requirements.
I was hoping to leave these fixes until 2.16.0 but Apple have quietly
changed some things and forced my hand.
I would be very grateful if anybody could take the time to test it.
It won't run on anything earlier than macOS Mavericks but I will upload a
different version for old OS versions soon.
Thank you!
Carl
Hello!
We need use the dcpomatic on a virtual servers. We have a server with two
processors, and when we start coding with dcpomatic on one virtual server
it works fast. When we start encoding with dcpomatic on two virtual servers
at the same time it works slow. Dcpomatic don't use a second proccesor.
Help us, say how to setup dcpomatic for use on two virtual servers, please.
With best regards, Boris.
I never had issues with hidden files. All DCI servers run Linux and are
aware of hidden files. It's just not 'pretty' if they go into a wide
distribution.
If you use a preformatted disc - use Mac OS disc utility to check wether it
is MBR or GUID/GPT formatted.
GUID/GPT can cause REAL issues with some servers - to the point that the
content vanishes from the disc. Make absolutely sure it uses an MBR
partition! If disc utility shows GUID - erase the disc and re-initialise
with the MBR option.

Hi.
I work on MAC and on PC. I make the DCPs with the MAC and when they are finished I pass them to the PC and from the PC I transfer them to the external NTFS hard disk to deliver. Could you copy them directly from the MAC to the NTFS hard drive? I have the NTFS for Mac application.
Thanks.
Ok, I understand, thank you very much for your complete explanation. very friendly. see you soon a greeting.
thanks

You may copy the content of that folder into the root directory, or, the complete folder 'Bewarethechild_FTR-1-25_F_NORSK-ES_51_2K_20200708_SMPTE_OV'
For that single DCP, it makes no difference. However, if you want to transport multiple DCPs on one disc, you need to use folders, as some files of a DCP always carry the same name and without a folder, can not be separated. In general, I would recommend copying the folder - it also makes sure you don't miss a file.
While it is allowed to change the folder name manually (but absolutely nothing inside that folder), if you do so, make sure you avoid any special chars outside the 'common' small ASCII charset, as some servers have then trouble recognizing the content. So, A-z, underscore, hyphen, nothing more.DCP-o-matic checks the CPL/folder name for compliance when you generate the project/DCP, but if you change it manually afterwards, you're on your own. This happens often with film titles that contain german umlaute, accents/diacritics, etc. Stay away from them - never name your DCP 'Jordi_Miró_FTR-1-25_F_NORSK-ES_51_2K_20200708_SMPTE_OV'

2. What do I have to do to be able to check without any playback problems with DCP-o-matic 2 Player? My machine is powerful and playback is not smooth.
3. What program do you recommend for exporting subtitles (SRT) to import them into DCP-O-Matic 2?
Thank you very much and greetings.

Hi all,
I'm hopefully not-too-far (TM) away from having a very alpha-quality
version of a "disk writer" tool for DCP-o-matic. This is a thing which
can format a drive as EXT2 and copy a DCP onto it from
Linux/macOS/Windows.
Since the potential for disaster is fairly high with this tool (i.e.
unrecoverably destroyed hard disk partitions) I am hoping to find some
brave and interested parties to test it out in a sort of "closed beta"
arrangement, rather than making it available to everybody in the normal
test version.
If you are interested in helping out with testing, drop me a line! All
that's really required is an understanding that the software might destroy
any data that happens to be on any drive connected to the computer that
you run it on. So if you have an old machine that you could tolerate
re-installing, that would be ideal! It doesn't need any great CPU power.
If you have access to a cinema to test your copied drives, even better!
I hope everybody is keeping as well as can be expected given the current
state of the world.
Kind regards,
Carl
Dear Carl,
Our customer Mrs. Deickert is working with your wonderful tool to create frequently DCPs for her cinema.
We created a remote working solution for, the Sony Server is connected to a small PC with is continuosly connected to the Internet. First we tried Apple iCloud synchronization to bring the DCP files from her Macbook Pro to the Windows PC, now we switched to GDrive.
Currently we face the issues that the GDrive sync app does not sync two files which are technically identical but have a different naming. I speak about both the j2c and the file in the movie folder. I do not know why during the export you save the video file with two diffenent names. Is there a way to disable the second video export in the movie folder? As GDrive is skipping the j2c movie file, the server does not allow to ingest the DCP in a correct way. Do you have any idea?
Thank you and best regards from Munich
René

Hello from Berlin, Germany.
I need help with exporting the necessary data out of dcpomatic in order for a posthouse to make me a DKDM that I can use, to create KDMs for festivals. I’m the director of that movie and we agreed to outsource this process from the posthouse to me to safe a lot of money and time for the KDM creation.
I exported the „KDM Encryption Certificate“ as explained in the manual and sent it to the company. They said, they need also a pem file. I didn’t know which file was right, so I exported everything to them what I found under the keys tab. 4 or 5 files. Then they finally made me the DKDM. But when I try to open in in the KDM Creator it failes and warns, that it maybe was made with the wrong certificate.
We are lost. Can you help me? Which files are exactly needed in order to create a DKDM and where do I export them?
Thanks, Martin

Hi all.
I'm making a DCP of compilation of short films. Half the films are 4K
source, the other half are 2K.
If I make the DCP as 4K, the 2K films will get uprezzed to 4K, but the
majority of cinemas will probably only have 2K projectors, so will
downres to 2K again.
Will that result in the 2K films looking worse than they would have if
the DCP was made 2K in the first place?
i.e. This would involve 2 translations: (1) DCP-o-matic 2K -> 4K scaling
and (2) J2K decoding discarding a resolution level. Are the two
translations a good mirror of each other? Or do they work in different
ways so it could result in the 2K film looking less sharp than if DCP
had been encoded in 2K in the first place?
Obviously, the 4K films would look less sharp if encoded as 2K. But what
I'm wondering is whether I need to make both 2K and 4K DCPs so the films
can be presented optimally in all cinemas, or whether just a 4K DCP will
cover all cases.
Hope this makes some kind of sense!
Jim
So, maybe it was indeed Resolve. There are other options as well, Adobe products, JPEG2000 plugins for Adobe products.

J2K and MXF is complex enough, and finding the actual cause will usually get you nowhere, at least when 'old' software has been used. A developer of current software of course, confronted with such an issue should be highly interested.

Hi all.
Anyone out there have access to a Wailua or recent version of EasyDCP
Player+, and be willing to run a DCP through it for validation?
This DCP is a 3 minute short which failed playback at a London cinema
recently. The fault was that picture and sound cut out (screen black,
silence) for a couple of seconds and then playback resumed, but it
skipped forwards by about 1 minute. This behaviour was replicated on two
different servers at this cinema, although weirdly it played back
faultlessly at another cinema.
The disturbing thing is that I cannot find any fault with the DCP with
the tools I have available. I would really like to find out what the
fault is so I can add tools to our workflow to catch similar faults in
future.
NB This DCP came from an unknown external source and was made with
OpenDCP. However, we rewrapped it with DCP-o-matic (without force J2K
re-encode) and the problem persisted in that rewrapped DCP.
If anyone is able to help, would be amazing.
Many thanks,
Jim
Hi all.
A filmmaker has sent me a DKDM to decrypt their DCP.
I sent them the certificate chain, and unfortunately they seem to have
targeted the KDM at the root cert rather than the leaf cert, so I can't
"unlock" the DCP in DCP-o-matic.
This particular filmmaker is in a far far away land and has been hard to
get hold of, so I am worried I may not be able to get a new KDM issued
in time for the screening.
Is there any way to switch around the certs in DCP-o-matic so the root
cert is used to decrypt? I can only see one private key in config.xml,
which I assume is for the leaf cert. However, I guess a private key must
have been created for the root cert too, in order to sign the
intermediate cert. Does this private key get saved anywhere?
If anyone is able to help, would be hugely appreciated.
Many thanks,
Jim
Hi Carl, hope all is well with you, I'm a user of your product DCP-o-matic
for two years now and I have to say that it's a very good DCP creator and
one of the best according to the reviews I've seen online. I use it to
create movie trailers for our cinema here in Barbados. Though I usually
receive links from our movie Distributors to download their DCP trailer
content for our screens, if there are any unavailable content I will go to
HDtrailers.net or Thedigitaltheater.com. and download the the content if
available. These trailers which I download from the two sites in the above
have to be prepped for DCP export which I use the DCP-o-matic DCP creator
to finish the trailer.
DCP file size: ( Distributors content file size vs DCP-o-matic file size.)
My observation of file size that the trailer content downloaded via link
from our Distributors have a greater file size than any trailer content
that I create using the DCP-o-matic creator.
I understand that the Distributor's content are mastered in Dolby 5.1 and
mixed in a facility studio with 5.1 audio track stems and full 2k video
content that is then exported to DCP with very expensive DCP creator
software like Easy DCP and Wraptor DCP. but the trailer content download
from Thedigitaltheater.com that are mastered in Dolby 5.1 are copies from
the good content and then converted to MKV and MP4 files that are smaller
in size because of the compression of audio and video bit rates.
If I convert one of these compressed trailer files to DCP using The
DCP-o-matic creator, then compare it to one of the Distributors files (the
exact trailer) there is always a difference in the size of the output file.
Mastering in Adobe Premiere Pro and Audition:
I've experimented with creating 2048x858 2K & 1998x1080 2K QuickTime video
files in Premiere with maximum bit rates and bit depths for optimum picture
quality, and have extracting the 5.1 files from the compressed content
with Audition then export to 5.1 wav files. Then I create and export a 5.1
2k sequence file that give me a 2.9gb or a 3.0gb file depending on the
length of the trailer.
DCP-o-matic export:
After I have imported the sequence file that I have created in Premiere
into DCP-o-matic and make all the necessary adjustments then I make the
DCP. After the DCP is finished, I am seeing that the file existing in the
content folder is half the size of the sequence file. Example! [ imported
sequence file = 3.0gb] [exported DCP folder with ASSETMAP, cpl, j2c, pcm,
pkl, VOLINDEX = 1.5gb.]
There is also a drop in resolutions in the exhibition of the trailer
content although all DCP contents are 2K.
(1) Is the compression rate set by default to 2gb alone for all contents
that are approximately 2 minutes 30 seconds?
(2) Or, is there something that I can do to maintain a maximum quality
content and keep my file size matching the imported file size? Thanks!
Best regards,
Clive.
Hello!
I am emailing you because (after upgrading) to DCP-o-matic 2.14.12, I have found that the program no longer works.
I was running v 2.12.12 for quite a long time, but decided to try and upgrade when it refused to convert a large mkv file. I thought maybe it was a bug that was later fixed.
However, the latest stable version on your site refuses to open on my Mac laptop. It gives me an error log (pasted below).
The latest test version doesn’t even give me an error log, OS X just flat out tells me it will not open.
I am running Mac OS 10.13.6
Is this a known problem? Or perhaps I am missing something
Thank you so much for any help you can provide. Your software is (usually) quite incredible.

Hi!
I am running DoM on a computer with two network cards, eth0 and eth1.
eth0 is on the 192.168.0.0/24 subnet and eth1 on 192.168.241.0/24.
Encode servers started on the 192.168.0.0/24 subnet are found
automatically by DoM, but none of the servers on 192.168.241.0/24. I
am sure there is connectivity on this subnet between the DoM encoding
computer and the clients (ping and ftp works among other things).
Is there a way to instruct DoM which network interfaces and/or subnets
to listen on? It would be useful to have it listen on several
subnets/interfaces as well.
Thanks!
Best,

Hello dear Sirs!
For creating DCP packages we build a workstation. Specifications are point
is below:
2 * Intel(R) Xeon(R) Gold 5118 CPU @ 2.30GHz
2 * KINGSTON SEDC500 SSD 1920 GB
2 * 32Gb 2400MHz RDIMM
OS: Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC
But we have a once problem.
The speed of encoding usually is 14-15 fps. Encode servers is not use.
Jpeg 2000 bandwidth for newly-encoded date is 180Mbit/s.
We made is about 100 DCP projects. Sources files were always different. The
speed is always about the same 14-15 fps.
We noticed that the CPU load during encoding averages 60%
Can you tell me what to look for why such a low coding speed?

Hi Carlh,
Just wondering if a PC and MAC would format DCPs differently?
I delivered some to a cinema today but 6/15 didn’t show up on the cinemas system despite being able to play on dcpomatic player on my laptop.
Thanks

Hi Carl.
Are there any changes in the format of the metadata.xml DCP-o-matic
project file between 2.12.x and 2.14.x?
I have a bunch of DCP-o-matic project files made with 2.12.10 but not
encoded yet, but would like to upgrade to 2.14.8. If I attempt to open
these old projects in DOM 2.14.8 in order to "Make DCP", should I expect
any incompatibility/problems?
Or may there be problems if I encode these old projects via command line?
dcpomatic2_cli --config /path/to/config /path/to/dom/project
Cheers!

Hi, is it possible to remove a segment of an existing DCP? I would like to remove 1 minute of video and audio (same scene) from an existing DCP to create a shorter version. If this is possible, how may I do so?
Thanks for your time.

Hi
I cannot find a good workflow for making OV and VF(s) from MKV
containing audio, video and subtitles.
If I do the OV (containing only audio and video) first I am having
trouble adding the subtitles later following the steps described in the
manual (https://dcpomatic.com/manual/html/ch17.html).
I do the folowing
1. New project
2. Add the OV DCP
3. Select "Split by video content" in reel type
4. Checking "Use this DCP..." in both video and audio tab
5. Add the MKV containing the subtitles (and audio+video from which the
OV was made)
Now the MKV is added to the timeline at the end of the DCP (all three
tracks).
So now I want to get the subtitles aligned with the DCP.
In the timeline view I drag the MKV content on top of the DCP content
and then click on some of the tracks.
Now one of two things happens:
1. DOM crashes with: "An exception occurred: Programming error at
../src/lib/butler.cc:133 Butler video buffers reached 480 frames
(audio is 0)."
2. DOM refuses to let me use DCP video ad audio: "Cannot reference this
DCP: it overlaps other video content; remove the other content"
Okay, my thinking is: I need to remove the audio and video track of the MKV:
1. In timeline view I separate the DCP and MKV again and remove the MKV
audio track successfully (right-click and Remove).
2. I try to do the same for the video track, but then both video AND
subtitle track is removed (and the MKV is removed from the content
listing)
So...what is a good workflow to make an OV with no subs and a VF with
subs from a MKV?
Cheers,
Christian (using DOM 2.14.2 on Ubuntu 18.04)
Hi,
In the manual at https://dcpomatic.com/manual/html/ch16.html#idp41 the
button "Add folder" is referenced several times - Is it really the
correct button? I would have thought the "Add DCP..." button was the one
to use?!?

Yes, that is similar to my experience with a 5k iMac. That's why I think the HighRes Retina Display of the MacBook Pro is the cause. You would probably need to set the window size very small to get a better playback performance. It's exaggerated on the Retina MacBook Pro as it offers a native 2560/1600 resolution on a 15" display, so, a better performing window size will result in a tiny video size. I'm still not sure if the actual video viewport resolution is the problem, as I can play half decode-res (999/540) in full screen on my older 15"/1440/900 MBP without any dropped frames, which would still be an acceptable viewport size on the much faster Retina Mac Book.
But, as that Retina machine even has trouble previewing the BBB source file in near-SD resolution in dcp-o-matic main, there must be something about the current display method causing this.
Carl is working on some hardware accelerated display method (e.g. OpenGL), but that's not ready for primetime, and it may be complicated to support it multi-platform (even though OpenGL is supported on all three common platforms). Maybe it is not the actual video output, but the color conversion? But that should strongly benefit from a faster CPU as between my older 4core MBP and that most recent 6core, but, the results do not cover that assumption.
I was trying to get Carl to set the video display optionally to the same size (or integer mutiples) of the actual decoded resolution, so to avoid scaling. Using the mouse and window resize elements, it is impossible to set it to a specific viewport resolution like 999/540 for half-flat.
So far, he hasn't been triggered by that idea. Maybe he missed it where I mentioned it. Maybe I should file a Mantis entry for it.
I am a bit concerned for that bad playback performance making it into 2.14 stable, as I notice many beginners are irritated about the dropped frames when testing their DCPs. Especially since Apple is nearly exclusively sold on those very high res displays now. Usually users can tweak it after some instruction about decode resolution and window size, but, as I saw it on that popular current MBP15", it can't be tweaked to a satisfying result.

Hi Carl.I have some doubts / problems of the DCPs with subtitles ....1. I export subtitles with FAB and SUBTITLE EDIT, and something I do not do well because I have several problems with size, position, ... There is some guide to learn how to export correctly and avoid these problems.2. If we put subtitles in a DCP can 2 "playlist" be made, 1 to watch the video with subtitles and 2 to see the same movie without subtitles? How should I do it?

Hi Carl - I just downloaded your DCP-o-matic! I am trying to convert a mp4
file to a DCP file, but I am not allowed to start with my MP4 as you can
see from the attached screenshot. I have looked in the tutorials, forums,
FAQs, etc. and can't find this specific issue.
Can you please help me? I am not the most tech-savvy person on the planet
but I am pretty sure I can figure this out if I can just get my file
imported!
I'd also like to be added to the mailing list.
Thank you so much,

During a recent workshop, one of the participants was using a 2018 MacBook Pro, 15" Retina (see screenshot). It uses a nice 6coreHT i7-8850H CPU at 2.6GHz base clock. We were very disappointed with DCP-o-matic's player performance, as even at quarter resolution decoding, it skipped very many frames. We disabled an antivirus software, but no change. I ran through BigBuckBunny to compare encoding speed with my older MacBook Pro, and the CPU/system itself is doing fine, 12.5fps during encoding, which is similar to what other 6coreHT CPUs yield. The machine is running Mojave/10.14.
My personal non-retina 15" MacBook pro uses an older 4coreHT CPU, Sierra/10.12, and encodes BigBuckBunny at half the speed, yet playback performance in player is far better - it plays 25fps at half 2k decoding resolution without any skipped frames.
I reduced the display resolution, because the Retina display has a very high resolution, and currently, DCP-o-matic player has a weak point in pushing the video to the display. That didn't solve the issue either (not the slightest bit). I noticed though, when I encoded BigBuckBunny, that DCP-o-matic wasn't even able to playback the preview of the original source video without stuttering. We tried both 2.12.20 and 2.13.132.
I still believe this has something to do with the display addressing. The filmmaker of course is very disappointed because she paid quite a bunch of $ for this machine.
Did anyone experience something similar on his machine? Unfortunately, there was only limited time during the workshop to analyze the issue, and I don't know anyone personally with a similar machine.
Carl - you mentioned a prototype open-gl output module - could you make a beta version of the player available to see if that is an immediate improvement?
I noticed something interesting on that machine - activity monitor shows only 6 of the 12 HT cores being active during playback in player. Usually, I would think that this would show a weakness with the multithreaded J2K decoder - however, if there is another bottleneck with the actual display process, that could as well mean that the J2K decoder is idling because the display process is too slow in asking for more frames?

Hi all,
With commit aa4fa75 I'll put DCP-o-matic into "string freeze" until
2.14.0 is released. That means I won't change any of the translatable
strings until then.
This would be a great time for all you lovely translators to update the
translations for DCP-o-matic!
Many of the current translations have significant gaps, as you can see by
checking:
https://dcpomatic.com/i18n
Any help that you can provide is very much appreciated :)
Do let me know if there's anything I can help with. Also, if you intend
to provide translations but haven't got the time, at the moment, do let me
know so I can plan my releases accordingly.
Kind regards,
Carl
Hello, my friend! I have been reading the website and trying to find an
answer to 5.1 mix.
I have a ProRes 4444 XQ with embed 5.1. After I created the DCP I checked
playback in Resolve and all audio channels are present. They all have audio
and are playing. In theater, I am only getting the center channel. Please
help as I have a movie premiere in 1 week. Thank you!
It may have gone by unnoticed (there's a final thread on the dcp-o-matic forum), but, Carl finally solved the issue of encrypted SMPTE DCPs not working on Sony systems.
While it turned out that this was actually a mistake in the Sony server software, Carl was able to fix it in his code as well. Sony has corrected that behaviour in Sony SRX-R51x and SRX-R81x projection systems from software 1.54 up. We did, however, still receive complaints from people who weren't able to control software updates for their target Sony systems, and thus we insisted to solve this issue from within DCP-o-matic as well.
While originally targeted at enabling encrypted SMPTE DCP playback (unencrypted SMPTE or encrypted/unencrypted Interop had no problems), the fix also enables proper verification and validation of all DCPs created by DCP-o-matic on Sony systems, so, no more 'NG/NO' flags in the DCP library. Aside from encrypted SMPTE DCPs, this never caused actual problems, but, especially for beginners, it was an ongoing reason for distrust and discomfort. Some other DCP mastering tools had to solve the same issue when encrypted SMPTE was demanded before Sony 1.54 came out.
The fix is contained in all test versions of dcp-o-matic from 2.13.108 up, and will of cause be in the upcoming 2.14 stable versions.
Regards, and thanks to Carl for not giving up on this. That issue caused by Sony was stupid enough to take much more of Carls time than normally needed for such a trivial bug. Glad it's over. It is also another important step in making SMPTE DCP the default for dcp-o-matic in future releases. Though not yet for 2.14 I think.
As far as I can guess, 2.15 test versions will see editable SMPTE DCP CPL metadata (e.g. markers) and also the step to create SMPTE DCP by default.
As some of you may know, the worldwide transition from Interop to SMPTE DCPs is taking place in 2019, and into 2020 for some areas.
Interop will of cause still be supported by both mastering tools and DCI projection equipment for the forseeable future.
If you're interested in the details, read here:

Hello Carl,
thanks for creating such a great piece of software,is there any way to
adjust the volume of a DCP? we tried to play the DCP on one of our
projectors but the volume was much too loud. the video is an ad so and will
be played next to other ads and trailers so we cant adjust the volume on
our server or else it would affect everything else. any help here would be
greatly appreciated! thanks.

Hi all,
This is a bit of a long shot but maybe someone can help.
I'm trying to help somebody make a KDM for Cineworld Glasgow Silverburn
screen 11, which appears to be a dual-projector ATMOS room.
We have the certificates for two TI ICPs and an Doremi IMB, and an example
KDM for this screen.
The IMB and ONE of the ICP certs make sense, but the fingerprint of the
other trusted device in the working KDM does not match the other ICP cert
(if you see what I mean).
Can anybody shed any light here? Won't the ATMOS processor (CP850?) also
require a certificate in the trusted device list?
Thanks for any insights.

Hi all.
Is there any way to force re-encoding of a DCP? We have a DCP which has
an illegally high bitrate, and would like to re-process it to re-encode
the frames at a lower bitrate.
Usually, where you don't alter the image (crop, colour conversion etc)
DCP-o-matic is clever enough just to repackage the original J2K frames
without re-encoding. But is there any way to force it to do a re-encode?
Or can anyone suggest a workaround? A good way to export to an image
sequence and then re-import that for example?
Many thanks,
Jim

And then the app shuts down.
I've tried reinstallation numerous times but to no effect. I've also
updated the OS on my computer.
Now I try to start the DCP-o-matic in the 2.12.13 version but the problem
started with the previous one.
My operating system is MacOS Mojave 10.14.1, but the problem appeared while
using MacOS High Sierra.
Have you got any clues what should I do if the reinstallation and the OS
upgrade haven't helped?
Kind regards
Mateusz
Hi all DCP-makers. Did anyone encounter film-copies for Screen X or made them?
Does it use DCP or there is any another technology?
It uses single DCP for all of projectors or separate DCP for each projector? Is it 2D or 3D?
Thanks in advance!

Hello team,
I tried the system and it's wonderful. Your system is really easy to use.
I would like to start using your system instead of an expensive system (like clipster), but I'm wondering is DCP-o-matic is really secure or not. I'm wondering how the certificate of my DCP-o-matic software is secure. For exemple, on a clipster machine, the certificate is base on a cheap in my computer so nobody can reproduce my computer to use the DKDM.
Thank you for you help

Hello,
I was wondering if DCPomatic can be created with Closed Captions?
If so, is there a tute on it?

Hello Carl and other Professionals!
I have an issue with DCP-o-Matic 2.12.6.
I have made a DCP, and it does not works on a DOLBY DSS 200 server & CHRISTIE CP 2230 projector.
The DCP was made as an InterOp, non-encrypted, 24 FPS, Scope, 100 Mbit/sec bitrate DCP with 6 channel audio and no subtitle. It works in many cinemas, but it does not work in the mentioned one above.
I have attached the followings in .rar:
-The CLP, the assetmap, the pkl, and the volindex of the DCP which does not work
-The preferences of the DCP (what setting I had in DCP-o-Matic when I made this DCP)
-A screenshot about the folder of the DCP, which does not work
-A screenshot from the cinema, which said that they receive the error message of something like this:
"The file is not appropriate video format"
As the actual screening is very close, I have to do something really quickly.
My current plan is to import this InterOp DCP in the newest version DCP-O-Matic, and make an SMPTE version from it. Maybe SMPTE will work better than InterOp. I don't know whether it is matter that the DCP are in reels or continuous.
What do you think? Do you have a better suggestion please?
Any advice is very appreciated!
Best regards,
Péter
Hi Carl.
I have a rather obscure question: At what point in the process of DCP
encoding are the hashes calculated?
Reason I am asking is that I have been making a large batch of DCPs but
now I suspect that one of the drives I've been using is faulty. Some
other files on the drive have become corrupt.
I've checked that all the DCPs on that drive pass a hash-check, but...
are the hashes calculated:
1. As the MXF files are created *before* they are written to disc?
or
2. Files written to disc first, and then read back from disc afterwards
to calculate hashes?
Because DCP-o-matic has the lengthy "calculating checksums" phase at the
end of encode, I am suspecting it might be the latter.
If it is, then I am wondering if it's possible some of the DCPs I've
made are corrupt.
I'm thinking that if any of the data got corrupted between DCP-o-matic
writing it to disc and then reading it back again to calculate the
hashes, the hashes would reflect the corrupted data. And so the fact
that my hash-check passes wouldn't guarantee the DCP is as it should be.
Or is there some other integrity checking process which would make this
impossible?
Sorry for rather random question.
Many thanks,
Jim
Hi! :)
I managed to convert some mp4 files some weeks ago, but now I´am stuck!
I dont know why this is not working, but I think it has to do with quotation in VBscript or batch files.
I need to be able to use the syntax from a wscript.shell object inside vbscript. And I just can not make it work … :( &%$#” or something like that ! :)
What I need to do first is to find the name of the file to convert in VBscript (that is no problem) and then use this name/variable in wscript.shell to convert/create the DCP. All files are mp4 or mov files. Could you please first show me the DCPomatic2_create and the DCPomatic2_cli syntax when I just wish to convert a file with the name “SomeFile.mp4” that resides inside folder “C\Files\MP4-files\” and save the DCP to folder C\File\DCP-files\” I do not understand what I am doin wrong - but seeing the correct syntax can tell me where I´m going wrong. Then I know it´s just quotation in vbscript that is the problem …

Hi all,
I have switched DCP-o-matic 2.13.61 to use FFmpeg for still-image handling
(rather than using ImageMagick). By "still-image" I mean input from a
group of TIFF/EXR/whatever files rather than a MP4/ProRes/etc.
I'm hopeful this will fix a number of problems; apart from anything else
it should preserve resolution in files with more than 8 bits per pixel.
I would be very grateful if anybody could test it: particularly those who
have had gamma/other troubles with still-image files.
Do let us know how you get on.
Best,
Carl
Hi,
I have a cinema that wants to use your software.
Does it transfer 4K Blu-Ray to DCP?
What is the transfer rate, X2 or X4?
Thanks

Carl: ALL DCPs made with DCPoMATIC since the beginning (several years) now
have degraded sound (low gain)
DCPs supplied by studios play okay. On same playlist, studio DCPs
(trailers/features) play with good sound,
DCPoMATIC DCPs bad sound.
PS When monitored thru processor, sound is good, going thru power amps n/g
but studio DCPs play fine.

Ah, so they used to be OK but now they're not?
You mean DCPs you have made and used to play now aren't working?
Or new DCPs you are making now aren't working?

Dear Colleagues,
I would like to ask you for a bit help. I have made a certificate, which you can see attached, and received a (D)KDM for it, you can see attached as well.
I have opened the DCP in DCP-O-Matic with the "Add DCP" function, and rigth clicked it and opened the received file with the "Add KDM..." funcktion, but it seems DCP-O-Maric reexamine the content and than nothing happenes, as when I try to make DCP, it says KDM NEEDS.
Maybe I received the KDM for the wrong certificate to the wrong chain part? Leaf instead of root, or backward?
What is the main way I have to receive the KDM? Root, inter or key?
Thank you for your hopefully quick reply!
