Subject: Request of information
Use dcp-o-matic for many months and with great satisfaction to transform movies
and movie trailers to be screened in dcp.
Now I ask: a movie in dcp, both from other sites, both produced with dcp-o-matic,
i can play it back, to check it, on my computer before project it?
Sorry for my inexperience.
THANK YOU

Hi. I've sent an encrypted interop DCP (to Berlin from US) to be screened
in a room using DVC Clipster. They are having problems with it, saying the
image is black and getting errors about the picture size and a mix of
interop and SMPTE elements. Everything passes validation on our end and
plays fine on easyDCP player. We've tried multiple keys, but that didn't
seem to be the issue.
Any ideas on what is going on? Has anyone loaded a DOM DCP into a clipster
before... are they compatible?

Just noticed this section http://dcpomatic.com/compatibility actually
missing quite a few combinations.
Maybe a matrix server vs. projector will be easier to read? Of course
the important information will hide in the footnote exceptions ;)
To be added:
DCP-2K4 -> Barco DP2K-10S
DCP-2K4 -> Barco DP2K-8S
IMS1000 -> Barco DP2K-10S
Alchemy -> Barco DP2K-10S
I'm copying my partner, she should be able to add a few other
combinations of Doremi IMB, GDC, etc.
Manuel AC
haha, up came my idea of adding shortcuts/plugins to DOM.
E.g. The Hateful Eight release triggers many requests for intermission DCPs of various length. Doing these in j2k would eat up much space (even if the DCP could probably be compressed very efficiently for transport if you keep the background simple).
So I just thought that an intermission DCP could be done much more space efficient using subtitles. Would also be very easy to have a basic framework with a countdown clock, and add different languages for 'Intermission'.
And then once we are there, why couldn't DCP-o-matic do it directly with, sort of a 'plugin'? And would there be other useful plugins for standard jobs?
- Carsten
Yes, I know, I am they guy who always voted to keep DCP-o-matic to the bare essentials and not pile up endless functions
That said, an intermission DCP generator could be a nice webbased application, especially since using subtitles, the resulting files would be small for download.
Just type in your catch-phrase or upload a background image, then download the resulting intermission DCP.
Hello to all and thanks for this wonderful gem called DCP-o-matic.
We used it in three different cinemas with no problems but now we had the
following error while ingesting a DCP on a Doremi server:
File size 8735 is incorrect (should be 8659)
Any ideas how to solve it?
Thanks,
Filippo

Hi everyone,
wondering who is using the Scale to fit width/Scale to fit height feature on a regular basis, or so to say, intentionally?
I thought about these options very often now (probably too often), and I can't get a grip on it.
In my work with DCP-o-matic, I never saw a need to use it.
I thought I could get a better idea if I'd just play around with it, but it doesn't seem to react in a way that allows me to see through.
E.g., when I select content and then choose either option, it applies a change to scaling/cropping once, but then doesn't revert back if I choose the other option. In my current trial, it presets a crop factor, I can reset that manually, yes. But it uses the same crop values for both Scale to fit width AND height?
Initially I thought these options would express the implementation of non-standard-aspect rations in the sense of the DCI/SMPTE standards:
One or both dimensions of a custom size container always needs to be the same as a full container - e.g. either vertical 1080 or horizontal 2048 (or their 4k counterparts).
But that doesn't seem to be the case?
Is it just a shortcut to two prominent scaling options?
Do these options still make sense since DOM is choosing default scaling for content based on content aspect ratio for a good while now?
The reason I am so picky about this is, I'm doing the german translation, and I have a hard time finding a good translation if I don't understand it...
Anyone?

I was just wondering - how can I see the status of the encode server in Ubuntu (using 14.04LTS) with the dcpomatic2_server? I can see it easily enough using Windows, but...
Also, is there a point to the dcpomatic2_server vs dcpomatic2_server_cli ? I set the dcpomatic2_server_cli to autostart and open in a terminal window outputting to stdout (so I can see it operating), so I am covered on that end, but they are just idle thoughts that I thought I'd ask.
Is anyone using the test version 2.6.10 to make content that is being played on-screen? Have there been any hiccups? I have installed 2.6.3, but I am suitably enticed by the idea of a up to 20% increase in encoding due to OpenJPEG changes.
Is there a consideration of being able to 'turn on' the master server as an encode server from within DCPoM? I didn't catch on until I looked at the log after my three computer test, to see that it had 22 lines, as opposed to the single machine one that contains thousands. I simply ran the encode server on the master as well as DCPoM itself, and that is not a problem (just put the encode server in the Startup folder), but I was simply wondering.
Finally, is there any way to find out what the overall fps for the encoding was (not necessarily per encoding server, although that might be neat) being stored in the log? I understand that I can simply calculate number of frames divided by number of seconds that encoding took, but I like to keep the logs to determine how it's all doing.
Note: none of this email is something that shows a problem. I'm just trying to get answers for people before I am asked, and they are questions that I would ask.
I do want to know the thing about the test version vs the stable version though. (Up to) 20% is not easily ignored, now is it?
Have a great day,
Leslie Hartmier

Hi all,
There's a user on the forum who is getting
"Failed to refresh DCPs of Library Server, the items in the DCP (Name of
DCP) isnt found un Assest Map."
when loading a VF (with just subtitles) over an OV DCP.
This seems strange. I can't see anywhere that suggests that the
*referenced* assets in a VF should be included in its ASSETMAP, and
EasyDCP Creator doesn't include them.
Does anyone have any clue about what the Sony's problem is here?
Thanks!
Carl
Hi. I have a DCP I made last week, but I need to replace the audio. Is
there a relatively fast way to replace the audio without starting over from
scratch?
I just tried making a new DCP and adding the original picture MXF as the
source, and this works, but was giving me a frame rate of 1.8 f/s on making
the new DCP. That would be about a 24 hour process and it would probably be
faster to just start over.
Thanks!

Hi. This topic has been discussed on the forum, but I was wondering if any
of you have had DCPs work on Sony gear? I tested a 4K & 2K, encrypted & non
on Sony RX320 and 515 and all failed to play on both projectors. These were
SMPTE DCPs.
Has anyone had luck on these systems?
Do you think Interop would maybe work instead?

There have been some recent additions to the Digital Cinema Naming convention.
The train is going towards CPL metadata, but the DCNC will be in use for quite a while I guess.
One recent addition to both DCNC and CPL Metadata is:
---
Subtitles are either generated in the theatre by the Digital Cinema projector, or are burned into the image by the studio. If the Language Code is UPPER CASE, the sub-titles are generated in real time by the projector. If the Language Code is lower case, the subtitles are burned into the image already.
---
Carl - what has become of my idea to put a clickable link to
http://digitalcinemanamingconvention.com/ into DOM ISDCF details GUI section (both preferences and DCP tab)?

I just registered there to find out what is going on there. I actually found our own screen there, but not some known other cinemas.
Will have to see what comes out of this once my account is fully functional. So far it seems this will be a comprehensive open FLM-x server.

Hi, Im using the latest version of DCP-o-matic and I'm experiencing freezing/long hangs at 99%. The clip I'm transcoding is 2h long and the only way I got it to work was to trim the clip to three different parts. It still freezes at 99% but if I wait 5 minutes the "computing image test" starts. I waited over 30 minutes twice when trying to transcode the whole clip.
I'm using the latest Mac version, I tried both the latest (4th of December) and the one before and both of them got the same problem.

Hi all,
Version 2.6.5 (http://dcpomatic.com/test-download) is up with an update
to v2 of OpenJPEG and with it some patches from Aaron Boxer which increase
encoding speed by around 20% (in my limited tests). If anyone has time
for tests of 2.6.5 the results would be interesting... both in terms of
encoding speed and whether the results look good.
Thanks,
Carl
Hi,
I have problems loading dcp’s into our dcp player (Kodak JMN-3000, old but still works). Both Interop and smpte have the same problem.
Strange thing is that it did load dcp’s created with dcp-o-matic in the past.
I made a dcp of a feature film containing 5 reels and subtitles, also in reels.
This is the error the dcp player gives me:
‘Required CompositionPlayList document property is missing’ (It gives this for every reel, so 5 times).
‘Required AssetMap document property is missing’.
Anyone has an idea?
Thanks,
Tom
Hi all.
At work we had 6 Intel NUC's that won't be used until sometime next
year, so I thought they might be able to boost encoding performance a
bit for my daily DoM usage.
Having done benchmarking before with older hardware, I thought it
would be nice to try the brand new DoM version with these rather new
NUC's which isn't at all top of the line as they are i3 :)
These are the results:
DCP-o-Matic 2.6.3 benchmarking

Intel NUC 5i3RYK
i3-5010U @ 2.1GHz Dual core (4 threads each)

DoM 2.6.3 64bit Live Server (on USB2 stick)
Host and nodes connected via gigabit LAN through a Cisco SG-200-08 switch.

host only: 02:34 (5,3fps avg)
6nodes_only: 01:02 (13,3fps avg)
host+6nodes: 00:48 (17,1fps avg)
Very nice speedups in my opinion... I am currently running benchmark
on the Sintel movie.
I'll post those results when done :)
PS. I've sent Carl the log files, so the network might end up on the
bechmark site.

Hi,
Having two MKV files each containing audio, video and subtitles... Would
it possible using DoM to make a DCP containing audio and video track
from the first MKV and the subtitle track from the other?
I have tried to use the Timeline functionality (DoM 2.5.0) but when I
try to remove the tracks not needed (audio and video from the second
MKV) all tracks of that MKV is removed.
Is this a bug, or am I doing it the wrong way?
Cheers,
Christian

Hi Christian,
That is either a bug or a missing feature, depending on your point of view
;)
A workaround might be:
1. Add the "subtitle" mkv.
2. Add the "audio/video" mkv.
3. Open the timeline and drag the audio/video mkv so it starts at time 0
(as the subtitle one does).
4. Make sure "use subtitles" is ticked for the "subtitle" mkv and not for
the "audio/video" one.
I'm not sure if this will work but I think it should.
Cheers,
Carl

Greetings.
I know it's possible to define how many threads to use when using the

Is it possible to define number of threads to use in the GUI version?

Hi Carl,
Last evening I ran my film through your program without error.
I shall now study some finer niceties of various settings and hope to
review the results in a theater next week.

Hi Bruce,
Thank you. Could your error have been

Forget about that !
DoM was also open, beside batch converter. Servers are used only by one instance.

Hi Carl
1. How can I add an audio.mxf as content? Do i have to unwrap it first?
2. I received a video.mxf, created by TotalCode Studio
When I add it as content, I see o gray screen (also when i try to play it with VLC), but i can import and play it in premiere 2015.
Is the j2c convertion of TotalCode Studio wrong?
Thanks,
George
Hi Carl,
I am experiencing DoM 2.5.0-1 on Ubuntu 14.04 crashing (seems 100%
reproducible) when adding a certain video MXF.
The crash does not occur with DoM 2.4.0.
The MXF causing the crash was made with OpenDCP 0.0.26 some years ago.
I can provide the MXF if needed (~400MB).
Best,
Christian
I received an "error during read (89)" message running DCP o-matic.
Should I be worried?

Hi everyone.
Trying to import DCP, get error "Could not find essense type". Seems, this
is due to encryption in some reels of DCP. Ideally, this error needs to be
changed to more self-explanatory.

Hi Carl.
To what degree (if any) is DCP-o-matic scriptable?
I've got to make a huge number of DCPs of short films (about 300) for a
festival, each one from a single video file. What I have in mind is:
* I put all the video files in a single folder
* I write a script which executes DCP-o-matic for each file passing the
path of the video file
* For each video, DCP-o-matic makes a DCP-o-matic project file (with
default settings) and save it to another folder
* (Ideally) DCP-o-matic also runs 'Analyse audio' on each video
Why do I want to do this? I'm using batch processing to make the actual
DCPs once I have DCP-o-matic project files, which works great. But with
this many films, I spend a lot of time creating a DCP-o-matic project
file for each file, waiting for it to analyse, then waiting for it to
analyse audio. Each of these processes runs pretty fast, but with this
volume of films, the time spent watching the progress bars is pretty
significant (and boring!)
If possible, it'd be great to be able to script that process so that for
each film I just need to open the project file that's already created
and adjust any settings that I need to. The save the project and move it
into another folder for batch processing to make the actual DCP.
I'm using the v1 branch as stability is key at this point.
Is the CLI interface documented anywhere? And if this isn't possible at
present, could you point me to the part of the codebase which deals with
these processes? Maybe I could hack around and see if I can add this
feature (though C++ is not my strong suit).

Just discovered that the trimming is relative to the dcp timecode,
once modified, and not that from the original source, as you would
expect having the option inside the Content tab?
I encountered a case when I need frame precise trimming to match with
some subtitles, created with the original file, but I'm not sure if
the dcp-timecode trimming could be useful in any other case.

I'm new to DCP-O-Matic, and having trouble with a test I'm doing.
When I add a J2C image sequence (DCI compliant, made in another app), it is
out of order. It starts in the middle of the movie and jumps around
throughout.
The naming structure of the files is:
EWS_DCP_092815_000000.j2c
EWS_DCP_092815_000001.j2c
EWS_DCP_092815_000002.j2c
...
Any ideas on what is happening? Would having the date in the name be
causing issues?
Thanks--

Hello!
when I have a DCP, made with DOM, and just want to trim a little part at
the beginning, can it be done without rendering the picture again? I
tried it with the same project and just trimmed the beginning, but DOM
just starts rendering again. When I make a new project and import the
DCP all i get is the folder with the xml files of the DCP without
picture and sound. Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks for the help

Hallo,
have installed precisely Version 2.4.0. 1.83 So far.
Under the heading Sound, Sound Show 'no longer works at the end of the
analysis the program:
Have different file formats tested. Nor can a file whose audio was analyzed,
add after restarting the program does not return. Also there immediately
appears the message that the program no longer works.
System information in the notes.
Many greetings

I’ve made a DCP of a 90 minutes documentary,
But the projectionist, don’t succeed to ingest the DCP, he say that there’s to much files and folder on the disk.
I’ve copied the whole folder of my DCP :
Is it something normal that I’ve this result and then a Video Folder with another .mxf with the same size of the video .xmf file in the first folder ?
Please help me !

Hi all.
Have anyone experience making 4K 3D DCP's`with DOM?
I just made one (4K 3D 24fps) in v2.3.0
I know there isn't a standard just yet, but DOM seems to pack it correctly,
so I wanted to test our ICMP's as Barco claim they can do 4K 3D 24fps.
The DCP played fine (Barco DP4K-19B + ICMP w/4K-60fps, 4K-3D License).
However, I couldn't exactly see if it was 4K or just uprezzed 2K... I'll do
a A-B test soon to test that out :)
However, I noticed something peculiar when checking the 'hints' box in DOM.
It gave this error:
"You are using 3D content, but your DCP is set to 2D"
I thought it might be because 4K and 3D was checked at the same time, so I
set it to 2K instead, but the message was still there.
I added two image folders, one with LEFT images and one with RIGHT images.
They have been properly selected under 'Content -> Video' as "3D left only"
and "3D right only".
I've also ticked "3D" under 'DCP - > Video'.
As stated earlier, the DCP played back fine (in 3D), so this might just be
a small bug.
Best regards,
Jonathan
With the new versions under OS X 10.10.5 I keep getting messages « Programming error at ../src/lib/ffmpeg_subtitle_stream.cc:86 » when analysing audio and previewing video.
[cid:E4947A7C-3055-44E3-B96B-0E66BDA92806]
I've downloaded both live server images.
When I boot either of them, the .bash_profile attempts to launch /usr/bin/dcpomatic{2}_server_cli.
However, the server doesn't appear to be installed in the image.
Can someone double-check me on this?
-David

This is fairly significant upgrade from the 1.x series and offers the
following new features:
- creation of DCPs with "proper" XML subtitles
- import of .srt and DCP .xml subtitles
- use of existing DCPs as content when creating new ones
- more advanced sound processing, including up-mixing from stereo to 5.1
There are also many other smaller improvements in various areas.

Hello everyone,
yes, I'm still using DVD-o-matic (version installed locally is 0.132
git) - partly because I could now probably operate it in my sleep,
partly because I know the results definitely work in the local cinema
for which they are intended. As I'll soon be moving to a new computer, I
had planned to reinstall the old DVD-o-matic (and slowly start a few
tests with DCP-o-matic) - but it seems I lost the installation exe.
Are old versions of DVD-o-matic still available somewhere/somehow? Could
anyone supply me with the 0.132 or something close to it?
Thanks in advance, Mike.
Hi all,
Unless any terrible bugs are exposed I plan in the next day or two to
"release" 2.2.0 of DCP-o-matic based on the test version 2.1.55 which
is here:
http://dcpomatic.com/v2
If anyone has the time to test 2.1.55 for last-minute problems it would
be much appreciated.
With best regards,
Carl
There seems to be an issue with encrypted SMPTE DCPs on Sony SRX-R510/515 (XCT-S10 Server) machines.
While unencrypted and encrypted INTEROP DCPs work, as well as unencrypted SMPTE DCPs, encrypted SMPTE DCPs do not work. They seem to ingest fine, and the KDM is properly attached to the content, but when trying to play, it gives an error: 'CPL xxx is not playable. Time period of the CPL or KDM is not present.'
KDM type is Modified Transitional 1.
This may be a Sony specific issue, but maybe someone has an idea what is going on. Seems that a signature method for the CPL or MXF is not supported or handled properly?

Hello!
I tried to import a video file with the cineform codec inside.
Dcp-o-matic 1.82 does not import it, just saying "could not find video
decoder", dcp-o-matic 2.1.5 crashes while importing. Is there a trick to
do it, or is it just not possible to import cineform codec?
Thank you
Andi
Hi all,
DCP-o-matic 1.82.0 is released, and it includes:
Fix for crashes or colour errors on left/right crop in some circumstances.
Fix to recognise .w64 and .flac as audio files.
New da_DK translation from Anders Uhl Pedersen.
Fix display of non-Latin characters in some cases on Windows.
Use 96kHz DCP audio when sources are sampled at more than 48kHz.
Thanks to Anders Uhl Pedersen and Patrick Haderer.
Get it from http://dcpomatic.com/download
All the best,
Carl
Hi all,
The 2.x branch of DCP-o-matic is now in "string freeze" for the 2.2.0
release. That means that none of the translatable strings will change
before 2.2.0, so now would be a good time for translators to send any
updates to their i18n files.
I know we experimented with Zanata but there weren't really any positive
remarks about it so if it's ok with everyone I will stick with the old
method of editing .po files...
Current i18n status and information is here:
http://dcpomatic.com/i18n
Please don't hesitate to send any queries to the list or to me directly.
Thanks and best regards,

I just realised that I sent the message below a while back only to Carl
and not the list.
Can anyone shed any light on how to deal with video which has "headroom"
in the signal (i.e. white is not completely white, black is not
completely black)?
Many thanks,
Jim

I’ve been able to compile DCP-o-matic on Raspberry Pi 2’s using the Raspian disk image. I had to install a few packages and compile/install a couple of third party libraries. I also had to make some changes to the script file to take into account that the CPU is an ARM chip, and not Intel x86.
Carl, any chance you’d be willing to take on another platform for your package distribution? Raspian is a direct Debian implementation, so you should be able to re-use a lot of your setup.
I’d be willing to donate a configured Pi 2 to the project if that would help.

Yup - similiar for the case when using DCPs/MXF with or without recompression. I would choose 'none' for all these cases - assuming that the MXFs had been properly XYZ converted beforehand.

Hello there,
I played around with the DCP import feature of v2. I know quite a few people would love to be able to edit out certain passages of trailers, etc. - e.g. a trailing 'in 3D' or 'from Dec 5th'. This can be done, but with the current implementation only for both audio and video tracks of a DCP. Very often it would be necessary to do a split edit, apply different trim points to video and audio track. This can only be done in DCP-o-matic when importing the audio as a separate file. Now it is possible to extract an audio.MXF to a multichannel WAV file (DCP-o-matic will not read audio from an MXF file currently, as it is trying to find video in it). But maybe there is a way to dettach the audio track of a DCP so that it appears as a separate content? I know this leads to the discussion what DCP-o-matic is and should be capable of. But my intention is not to boost it's capabilities to a full fledged editor, but to make the most of the existing GUI with simple actions.

Hi all,
DCP-o-matic version 1.81.0 is now available from:
http://dcpomatic.com/download
This release includes:
Updated ru_RU translation from Igor Voytovich.
New pl_PL translation from Marek Skrzelowski.
Updated fr_FR translation from Thierry Journet.
Allow audio from different content streams to be used together in the same DCP (#274).
Set the default colour conversion slightly more intelligently depending on content type (#565).
Adjust colour conversion interface so that it's easier to use a preset.
Be more strict about what characters are allowed in DCP names.
Adjust job view in various ways (fixing #578).
Fix hang if you cancel a paused job.
Fix for distorted audio in some cases.
Slightly improve performance with high speed encoding setups.
Use j2c_<uuid>.mxf and pcm_<uuid>.mxf for picture/sound MXF filenames (#336).
Fix for failure to analyse audio or create DCPs with negative audio delay in some circumstances (#571).
Fix for failure to import video MXFs in some cases (#566).
Fix for crashes when using some colour conversions which result in out-of-range XYZ values.
Fix for failure to encode 3D from separate folders of images in some cases (#634).
Thanks are due to Carsten Kurz, Marek Skrzelowski, Thierry Journet and
Igor Voytovich.

Carl
Hi Carl - can you comment on the scaling types offered in DCP-o-matic? Is that performed by FFMPEG functions? I tried to look up the more exotic ones (e.g. 'X'), but did not find all references from here:
https://www.ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg-scaler.html
'X' could be the mysterious 'experimental scaler'?
I know it's useless for most applications except 'real' experimental ones, but I am currently missing 'nearest neighbor' or pixel repeat. I may find other ways to do what I want to do, but, just in case...
Wondering how I could downscale an image series with the most basic pixel repeat method. Maybe I have to batch image magick with the -sample resize option.
Leads us to my old issue that I think scaling options should be under the content tab and should be made content specific - not under DCP tab.
And that takes us to v2 where the strict separation of content and DCP options in the GUI is broken up (e.g. with audio). Anyone likes to discuss this?
I really preferred the strict separation of content related parameters and formal DCP parameters in v1. For my thinking, that is the most solid approach to create well defined compositions. Now that DCP-o-matic uses more inherent parameter constraining to assure formally correct DCPs, I would understand that it isn't necessary anymore - but I still don't like it ;-)
Anyone?

Hi all,
I plan to release version 1.80.0 (based on 1.79.8) within the next few
days. If anyone has any translation contributions or big problems with
1.79.8, do let me know.

I'm working on a video that was given to me by a film maker, it's an MP4
file and it has subtitles, the subtitles were given as a separate Excel
file. Does anyone know how I can use the .xls file as subtitles for an MP4,
or even to use it to make a new MP4/MKV file with subtitles embedded?
Below is an example of the xls file.

Hello all.
While encoding a DCP from a Prores422HQ file last night, I noticed the
following error output:
[swscaler @ 0x103830800] Warning: data is not aligned! This can lead to
a speedloss
...lots of progress...
[prores @ 0x103811e00] invalid plane data size
[prores @ 0x103811e00] invalid plane data size
[prores @ 0x103811e00] ac tex damaged 3371, 1024
...progress until end
NB I was using dcpomatic_cli, rather than the GUI. The DCP-o-matic
project was created using the GUI, but then I use a script to call
dcpomatic_cli, in order to batch process multiple DCPs.
DCP-o-matic 1.79.0, Mac OS X 10.9.5.
A few questions:
1. These errors/warnings are not included in the log file - they were
just output to the terminal, presumably from FFMPEG. Shouldn't they also
go to the log file? If I'd run the encode from the GUI, the errors would
be silently ignored and there'd be no record of them.
2. Should I be worried about the "invalid plane data size" and "ac tex
damaged" lines? Presumably this indicates corruption in the source file,
but has FFMPEG quietly fixed that, or may the DCP be corrupt too?
3. Does "3371" indicate the frame number which is possibly corrupt?
4. I've noticed the "swscaler" warning message a lot before on various
files. Does this have a major impact on encode times?
I hope someone can advise...
Many thanks,
Jim
Hi all,
I'm experimenting with Zanata, a web-based tool for translating
things. I've uploaded the current translations for the 2.0 branch of
DCP-o-matic to:
https://translate.zanata.org/
with the name "DCP-o-matic". You will need to sign up with Zanata (or
use OpenID) and then you should (in theory) be able to make and update
translations right-in-your-browser (TM).
If anyone would like to try it, please do, and let me know how it
goes ... and if it's any better than poedit, or whatever you are
currently using.
If you want to try a language that is not yet translated, let me know
and I will add it to the list.
Thanks!
Carl
Hi all.
While teaching a group of people how to use DCP-o-matic last weekend
(DCP-o-matic is now on the syllabus at London Film School!), I came
across the change in v1.79.0 that default colour space conversion is now
Rec709.
For the majority of the people who'd brought their film to test on, we
found that sRGB was the best setting for them. We were comparing their
source files (mostly Quicktime) to the resulting DCP viewed in Doremi
Cineplayer (evaluation version) and found that Rec709 was changing the
colour balance of the image (most notably, making it darker).
What was the rationale for changing the default to Rec709?
And is there any way to examine a Quicktime file to find out what colour
space it's in? With shorts filmmakers, they often don't know themselves!
Presumably the default output from Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro etc
remains sRGB rather than Rec709?
Many thanks,
Jim
Hi all,
I have made a beta test release of DCP-o-matic version 2. It is not ready for general use yet, but testing would be most welcome. You can install it alongside an existing version 1, so you can carry on using 1.x for important work.
You can see details of version 2 here:
http://dcpomatic.com/v2
Any comments or bug reports are welcome to carl(a)dcpomatic.com, or to Mantis (http://dcpomatic.com/mantis).
I would be grateful to hear any reports of success as well as failure.
With best regards,
Carl
I participated in an interesting thread on film-tech that deals with an anomaly of Doremi (now Dolby) IMBs. As far as we found out, the Doremi IMB will not display 4k content when it was encoded with OpenJPEG - that would be true for all open-source DCP creation utilities, like DCP-o-matic, OpenDCP, etc.
A guy from france with some programming insight into both OpenJPEG and the Kakadu encoder hinted me towards a possible reason for this - JPEG2000 offers multiple resolution layers, 2k and 4k are one of these resolution layers (smaller ones are there as well). He pointed out that OpenJPEG and Kakadu may use different numbering schemes to express these resolution layers, and that the Doremi IMB may misuse the highest number in OpenJPEG, thereby only selecting the 2k layer instead of the higher 4k layer.
As a matter of fact, our Sony XCT-M10 (part of the Sony SRX-R515/510 projectors) does not have that issue, it will display 4k from both OpenJPEG and Kakadu.
So far, it is not entirely clear to me wether that is an issue with OpenJPEG/DCI profiles handling, or if it is a flaw in these Doremi IMBs.
I have never been a strong endorser of using 4k for your own projects, in most cases, it's not worth the extra memory or compression time. It is actually really hard to create/maintain real 4k value in your source footage. Aside from that, all 4k projectors do a pretty good job in upscaling 2k to 4k anyway. So aside from some synthetical patterns (which actually lead us finding that bug), I see little benefit in creating 4k DCPs. Same is true for using higher J2k bandwidths than 150MBit/s as long as you stay within 24-30 fps content.
The second issue is that while testing the 4k behavior of the Doremi and Sony IMBs, we found out that, even when using other J2K encoders like Kakadu, the Doremi IMB can not display complex full screen patterns in 4k - it will drop to 2k as well. We only confirmed this with synthetic checkerboard patterns again, it is not clear how likely this is to happen with any 4k real-life footage. We will conduct more tests to find out about that. The Doremi will not only show complex 4k content in 2k only, it will also create nasty flashing when switching between both modes. So there is a another good reason to not create 4k DCPs if not absolutely necessary.
Well, until the first issue is either solved in OpenJPEG or the Doremi firmware, there are little chances that these nasty flashing artifacts turn up with any 4k content created with DCP-o-matic or OpenDCP - simply because the Doremi will not select the 4k layer at all.
There is an early J2k viewer contained in the OpenJPEG 1.3 package which is able to detect the different numbering schemes between OpenJPEG and Kakadu. There is also a hint towards it contained in this paper on J2K encoders - even if it doesn't deal with DCI J2C profiles - see tables 1 and 2 on page 3 of this document: http://purl.pt/24107/1/iPres2013_PDF/An%20Analysis%20of%20Contemporary%20JP…
Carl, did you ever come across the resolution layer numbering scheme when dealing with OpenJPEG in DCP-o-matic?

Hello all.
I wonder if anyone has experience of making DCPs for access screenings
with audio description track and open caption subtitles?
I'm being asked to quote for the work of creating DCPs for 4 hours of
short film programming with audio description track and open caption
subtitles for a film festival, and have no experience in the area. The
subtitles and audio description audio tracks will be produced by the
festival.
It it really as simple as adding the audio tracks in DCP-o-matic and
burning in the subtitles to the video before encoding? Or are there any
gotchas?
Many thanks,
Jim
Looks like when I change the gain for a sigle channel is not showing
up in the Show Audio graphic.
Also, the channel gain overrides the general gain or is relative to
the other channels? Let's say I have a general gain of -10dB and
center channel is -5dB, will center channel be -10dB or -15dB?
Just to make it harder, it's an stereo source upmixed to 5.1 (up-mixer A)
v. 2.0.41
Thanks!

Hi Carl,
I noticed there have been some recent changes/improvements to the color conversion, assisted by Dennis Couzin.
I would like to pick up one issue that seems to have remained unsolved in some previous discussions, and where I have a hard time to understand the issue completely myself.
That is, source footage in P3 color space.
More and more people use Adobe products and especially DaVinci Resolve for editing/grading, and quite a few of them are encouraged to use P3 for their editing, because they are told this would be the recommended color space for DCI work. Hence I would like to assume that when creating a final master within that color space, that this is already in XYZ. But that doesn't seem to be the case?
As more and more people are using RAW cameras with a wider gammut than plain sRGB or rec709, I think we should address this issue.
There have been a few questions regarding proper P3 conversion on this list before, and I think they have been left unanswered.
When I google for this, there seems to be quite a bit of confusion. I'm not even sure wether P3 in DaVinci Resolve could be only a preview colourspace that is used when suitable display devices are connected.
Maybe Dennis can help in solving that puzzle as well?

Hello,
It may have already been noticed.
Here are dcp-o-matic 1.78 and ubuntu (unity) 14.04 64bits.
aim : one dcp from 11 still images (.tif)
In file browser Nautilus I've selected my 11 images using ctrl+click.
Then I've dragged'n'dropped them onto the dcp-o-matic window.
It seems to work but actually the images are "loaded" in dcp-o-matic
without any duration* or framerate. I've seen this in the "time" tab.
*default duration for still images is set at 1 second in the preferences.
If loaded from dcp-o-matic using the import file button, images are
correctly set. Though they are not sequenced, alphabetically or
numerically speaking. And previewing did not work.
Best regards,
Gerald.
We just had it on a german cinema newsletter - there has been a new 'memorandum of understanding' between german distributors, advertising agencies and mastering facilities that stricter LEQ(m) values should be adhered to for advertising and trailers. They explicitly mention Dolbys LEQ meter software ('Dolby Media Meter', around 750€), and values should be 85 Leq for Trailers and 82 Leq for other preshow content.
Now that is revolutionary. TASA and Leq(m) is around since... say, the year 2000 or so...?

Hmm, funny I didn't notice this earlier, but...
The scaling options show:
4:3
Academy
1.375
However, Academy IS 1.375:1. The older silent/pre-Academy AR is 1:1.33, which is the same as 4:3 - so, can we get rid of ONE of these scaling choices? That would be nice, wouldn't it ;-)
I am currently redoing the german translation and decided to beef up the aspect ratio naming a bit, so we have numbers and names.
e.g.
1.78:1 (16:9/HD)
1.85:1 (Flat/BW)
2.39:1 (Scope)
That should make it more clear to beginners. At least, I think it's important to also show real numbers there, not only names, because they can be misleading sometimes.

Hi Steph
I hope all went well on Sunday night. Can you give me some dates/times you can come in for more training and I will organise it?
Regards
Paul

We just had it on a german cinema newsletter - there has been a new 'memorandum of understanding' between german distributors, advertising agencies and mastering facilities that stricter LEQ(m) values should be adhered to for advertising and trailers. They explicitly mention Dolbys LEQ meter software ('Dolby Media Meter', around 750€), and values should be 85 Leq for Trailers and 82 Leq for other preshow content.
Now that is revolutionary. TASA and Leq(m) is around since... say, the year 2000 or so...?

Hi all,
I'm hoping that the test version 1.77.16 of DCP-o-matic will become 1.78.0
within a day or two. If anyone has any show-stoppers or last-minute
translations, do let me know.
Thanks all!
Carl
Hi there,
After being unhappy with the Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit running on my new old Dell-box (updating all the time, running wild with strange processes etc.) I installed Linux. Tried an old DELL 10.x install first, but that that did not have the necessary dependencies for DCP-o-matic. Upgrading to version 12–with some complaints by the installer–let me finally add the package, but it would not start DCP-creation.
Putting a new 14 on the box failed, but I could do a clean install of version 12. Major performance increases? DCP-o-matic encoded at a little over 1 fps, as opposed to >10 under Windows. OK, it is using about one of the 24 cores available…
Upgrade to v 14 was painless, but the performance has not increased. Does someone have an idea where I might be going wrong? The BIOS settings seem to be OK. Multicore and multithreading etc. Is there some setting I have to do in some Linux app? When I use the systems analyser I can see periodic activity of all cores with v 14, but that is just a wide spike, and after that it is back to crawling speed.
And this setup should run so much better. I am a bit frustrated currently, but not enough to download try to read the source code ;-)
Any ideas anyone?
Many thanks in advance,
Andrew
Hello!
I need a little help, maybe someone knows what I am doing wrong.
1. When I make a DCP (using DCP-o-Matic 1.77) and set the audio channels
in the DCP Tab to 1, for a mono DCP, I end up with seeing only the left
channel in the Content/Audio Tab. So rooting the audio to the center is
not possible. When I do it before setting the audio channels to 1, I can
root the audio to the center, but the DCP has no Audio at all in the
end. And when I try to ingest it, the Doremi says "Unsupported odd
number of audio channels(1)". Ingest Error.
2. When I try to make a 3.0 DCP by rooting the left and right channel
also to the center and set the audio channels to 3, the Doremi is also
not happy and doesnt ingest it. I know, 3.0 is not a DCI compliant, so
maybe thats the reason and the solution is to not choose it? Possible
workaround could be to set the DCP Name by hand and not use ISDCF Name.
Setting audio channels to 6 and name it _30_ in the title, right?
Thanks for your help!
