Hi Carl,
could you explain these options to us (the Trim settings in itself is clear, although it is always worth to mention they are offsets FROM the Start and FROM the end)?
I know the 'Keep video in sequence' belongs to the content/timeline box above the Timing options, but still, what does it mean?
And, a long time want to have - cue to any position with the play slider below the preview image, then hit a key or 'Set' button to input the current cue time below the slider into the Trim number boxes.
Why do we have these 'SET' buttons anyway?
What has become of the DVD-o-matic alternative options 'PlayTrim/EncodeTrim'?
- Carsten
DCP properties in DCP-o-matic allows to set odd numbers of audio channels - how does it encode if I set it to 3,5,7? I see it updates the channel matrix accodingly, but what will be the resulting audio.mxf?
- Carsten
When I try to add an MP3 file to a project, I get an error:
'Error (could not find video stream)'
Seems that the 'MP3' extension or the file header makes DCP-o-matic think it is a videofile?
- Carsten
Currently, DCP-o-matic maxes out at 12 audio channels (which is fine ;-) ). The channel number is set under DCP properties. Will this actually create a 12ch BWF/MXF in the DCP, or will more than 8ch always create a 16ch BWF/MXF with unused channel padded with silence?
Wondering wether 10/12/14ch BWF/MXF are allowed at all...
- Carsten
Ok, ok.
I guess I know where my confusion comes from : satellite receiver and subtitles on live shows ???
Bmp so no alpha gradient on DVD.
Thanks

Several dependencies need to be updated:
libboost-thread1.53.0 -> libboost-thread1.55.0
libboost-filesystem1.53.0 -> libboost-filesystem1.55.0
libboost-date-time1.49.0 -> libboost-date-time1.55.0
Overriding during installation still does not work because the binary

Yes, PNG is part of the spec. It's used when very special characters are needed, very 'graphic' layouts, colours, etc.

Yeah, and then it would be a nightmare to start editing OCR errors during/before the conversion ;-)

'Qube Cinema to Introduce Cloud-Based KDM Service at NAB
KeySmith.biz Offers Invitation-only Access to Easy Key Management Service for Independent Filmmakers & Postproduction Facilities'
The interesting part here is that through this service, the user has access to a worldwide cinema server certificate database to create KDMs. Doing this in DCP-o-matic needs a specific certificate to be present/provided by the cinema beforehand. For most cinemas/operators, dealing with their certificate(s) directly is not part of their daily business.
- Carsten
Hi all,
This version includes:
* Various translation fixes, including a new translation to Dutch from Theo Kooijmans.
* Fixes for a number of bugs, including:
- failure to create KDMs (and bad initial start-end dates in the KDM dialog) on OS X.
- lack of internationalisation on OS X.
- glitchy subtitle display in some cases.
- broken calculate-audio-gain option.
- glitches in the colour conversion dialog on OS X.
- bad rounding of timecodes in some cases.
- an error on creating 0-audio-channel DCPs.
- crash on trying to use DPX files.
* Allow specification of the video frame rate that an audio file is synced to.
* Add option to give left and right eye content separately for 3D.
* Removal of some of FFmpeg's filters that don't work with image bit depths greater than 8 bits per pixel.
* Allow up to 500MB/s JPEG2000 bitrates.
* Improvements to the behaviour of the view's position slider near the end of films.
* A tidied-up configuration dialogue, especially on OS X.
* Auto-saving of film metadata before starting a DCP encode.
* Some incomplete and clumsy attempts at allowing download of server certificates for KDMs.

Hi,
I'm new to this list. So first, thanks for coding DCP-o-Matic, a great job that helps a lot.
And a question:
Would it be possible to reload an already made DCP not encrypted, and use DCP-o-Matic to encrypt it and then generate KDMs?
Same question for a DCP which is already encrypted, may be with another software, and use the symetric key to generate KDMs?
Thanks,
Fred
Not ingestin film but I have no problems when the transmission of trailer make 3D format is not correct, that is not in 3D format for cinema but can be 3D format for TV or computer. Jame awaiting replies from your side.
Thank you.

Hi all,
DCP-o-matic 1.65.0 is now available to download from here:
http://dcpomatic.com/download
Changes in this version include:
* Updates to the it_IT translation from William Fanelli.
* Basic support for 7.1/HI/VI audio tracks.
* Add support for no-scale of the input video.
* Update FFmpeg library version to fix incorrect frame rates with some source files.
* Fix for failure to open sound files with non-ASCII filenames.
* Fix missing RMS plots in the audio analyser.
* Fix incorrect rounding of timecodes in some cases.
* Speculative fix to stop OS X sleeping during DCP encodes.
* Use the correct timecode separator for frames (: rather than .)
* Fixes to some errors in the XML for Interop DCPs.
* Be more careful with catching exceptions from the KDM creation code.
* Fix for a crash on trying to seek when there is missing content.
* Some fixes for crashes under low-memory conditions.
* Centos 6.5 RPMs.
* Fix another repeated exception from the server-finding code.
* Fixes to strange behaviour of the colour conversion dialogue under OS X.
Thanks to William Fanelli, Ivan Pullman, lukegb and Adam Colt and all who
have tested the interim versions.
Best regards
Carl

Hello,
I had some feedbacks on the script_upmix :
first there was a mistake in method 3 ending in missing right channel or
left right inversion.
That is fixed.
Some think method 2 is quite "loud" : nice for music, concert, musical
video clip but less good for subtile dialogs and atmosphere soundtracks.
It might be useful. Attached is newer version of the script_upmix (bash
script quite linux-universal)

Good day,
First, congratulations with your fine program! We are testing and here is a
small problem, We are ingesting with no problems in DOREMI servers, but
when we try doing the same in Cinema LMS, we cannot get lms to recognize
content ??? Can you help.... Thanks Tom Fermanian Cinema Pine, Ste.
Adele, Qc Canada
Was wondering if it was possible to build a DIY open sources LMS.
Also not entirely sure exactly what a LMS is/how it works, anyone got any
good links to an overview/primer.
Hope people don't mind me posting this here, it is for use with a DCP
server and my googeling keeps on returning info about Learning Management
Systems;(.
Probably best to reply off list.

I am the program using DCP-o-matic and is very bizarre, but I've a problem when you make a trailer in 3D format does not decide to play when we dcp2000 Doremi server and projector is nec 1200C.
please give me a ndihime how to make trailers in 3D format that you play in dcp2000 Doremi server and projector nec1200c.
Thanks.

Hi all,
I have just changed the name of the DCP-o-matic mailing list from
dvdomatic to dcpomatic. I think I've arranged it so that the old email
addresses will still work. Do let me know if anything strange happens.
Best regards
Carl
Hi all,
DCP-o-matic version 1.64.0 is now available for download from:
http://dcpomatic.com/download
Selected highlights include:
* The basics of per-channel audio gain, so that a particular source
channel may be passed to different DCP channels with different gains.
* A warning on choosing ‘Make DCP’ if the disk is likely to have
insufficient free space for the DCP.
* A primitive ‘check for updates’ feature which may be triggered from
the ‘Tools’ menu or configured to be automatic at startup. It defaults to
not checking at startup.
* Updates to de_DE translation from Markus Raab.
* Updates to sv_SE translation from Adam Klotblixt.
* Updates to fr_FR translation from Theirry Journet.
* Allow choice of what to install (master/server) on Windows.
* Add subtitle X offset option.
* Fix bad A/V sync in some (and maybe in lots of) circumstances.
* Fix failure to open some .mov files on Windows.
* Fix incorrect subtitles when speeding up or slowing down video for the DCP.
* Fix incorrect audio position when using video files without audio tracks.
* Fix bad DCPs when resuming encodes of 3D content.
* Fix missing subtitles when they are in content with a non-zero position.
* Fix to formatting of Interop <ScreenAspectRatio> tags.
* Fix asset flags on Interop DCPs.
* Fix incorrect colouring of subtitles in some cases.
* Various fixes for efficiency on fast machines.
* Fix mis-timed subtitles in some cases.
* Fix error-reporting loop after long runs (and suspends) on Windows.
* Fix over-fussiness in names of 1-file-per-frame sources.
* Fix the inability to specify the frame rate of 1-file-per-frame sources.
* Try to stop Windows machines going to sleep during encodes.
* Make sure that forced languages override the environment for all messages, and not just some.
* Don't give .xml suffixes to VOLINDEX and ASSETMAP in Inter-op DCPs.
* Prevent some cases of half-finished DCP directories being created.
* Fix error on cancelling and re-starting a DCP transcode on Windows.
* Use Mbit/s instead of the incorrect MBps in the user interface.
Thanks to Adam Colt, Luke, Thierry Journet, Denzil Kriekenbeek, Brad
Miller, Markus Raab, Adam Klotblixt and all other DCP-o-matic users for
their suggestions, bug reports and contributions.
Do not hesitate to drop me a line at carl(a)dcpomatic.com with any questions
or problems.

On a german projectionists forum someone posted first results for a dual xeon 2687W machine - total 16 cores 32 threads at 3.1GHz (very expensive, each CPU costs around 1.500€), running under WIN64
The results are a bit disappointing, Sintel runs through in around 32min - which is so far the fastest machine - but still a lot less than to be expected from such an expensive machine. The user confirmed that total CPU load during the encoding is only between 30% and 55%, no matter how many threads he configured. That computes into something like 11fps. The fastest so far I think was a 6-core i7-3930K at around 5.5fps. From extrapolating earlier results, 16 cores should result in something like 20-22fps, so, more or less half of that machines theoretical performance is not utilized by DVD-o.matic.
I assume that, roughly put, dvd-o-matic is split into something like preprocessor (input, FFMPEG, Filters, etc.), J2k encoding, postprocessor (audio, wrapping, XML, filewrites, etc). And that probably only the j2k encoding can actually use multithreading, one thread per frame? Or is there a fixed limit on the number of encoding threads used, even if set higher?
So it may be that the 'pre- and postprocessor' running singlethreaded may be the bottleneck on 'multi-multicore' machines, and performance can only be increased moderately with higher clock rates. Said machine has three fast SSDs for system, swap and workspace, and 64GBytes of RAM. I think Asus Z9 P -D8 mainboard.
From this, to me it looks as if a single Intel CPU six to eight core HT machine at the highest available clock rate is the most economical sweetspot currently for DVD-o-matic. More CPUs/cores are wasted as price increases. A six core CPU sells around 500€.
To give a more practical number, a typical 2hr full feature, using this 'sweetspot' machine will be converted to DCP in around 4-5 hours at 10-12fps average (all referenced to SINTEL encoding speeds - as we know, J2k encoding speed is highly content dependent).
Of course, the mentioned user did not build this machine only for DVD-o-matic, he uses other video editing and rendering software on it as well so it will still payout for him.
Meanwhile if have checked other DCP software performance figures and, as most of them are using OpenJPEG, their results are more or less the same.
Some of them allowing only image series input with only preconformed image and audio data and thus a more simple preprocessor may use more than 6-8 cores more efficiently than DVD-o-matic. But then the preconforming from common video/media formats will need additional time ahead of the encoding as well.

Hi all,
It has been suggested that it would be useful to have a list of
confirmed-working combinations of DCP-o-matic version and server/projector
models.
If you have witnessed the glorious sight of a DCP-o-matic-created DCP
working correctly on a DCI system, if would be great to hear from you with
details of:
The projector/media server model numbers.
The version of DCP-o-matic.
Any other interesting information that you can think of.
I'll make up a list to put on the website.
Thanks!
Carl
In a film-tech discussion, offering an inverse telecine option to DVD-o-matic was suggested for interlaced material at 29,97fps. As far as I know, recent versions of FFMPEG offer inverse telecine.
Maybe you can do some tests, Carl?
Personally I try to avoid to convert DVDs and usually stick to BluRays. However, I understand that sometimes BluRay with native 24fps is not available for certain titles.
If it's just a different processing flag for FFMPEG, it shouldn't be much work. Of course, not all 29,97 interlaced material can be inverse telecined, so it should be a manual option.

I just set up a new theatre work-station and downloaded the latest
DCP-o-matic 1.34 for a cleanly and newly installed Ubuntu 13.10 64-bit.
Installation went well, but the program was not possible to start from
GUI-menus, no messages or program starting. No hanging processes visible in
top. Trying the command-line I got an error "libxml-something-ssl missing",
which when installed solved the issue, the program starts and runs as
expected from GUI-menus.
So I see 2 problems:
- libxml-something-ssl is missing from the installer
- Starting the program from a menu fails mysterisously without any messages

VLC 2.10 has recently been released into the wild and the DCP, or better, J2C MXF support is back in it. Jean-Baptiste told me a while ago they were working towards inverse xyz and improved playback performance after the initial experimental support in 2.01-2.03. If anyone want's to try it out...
http://www.videolan.org/
You can not open a CPL yet, only the video MXF, the extended file open dialog allows you to open and play the audio file in sync (provided there are no separate offsets in the raw files).
This should work for most single-reel DCPs made with DVD-o-matic.
Please comment on your performance.

Hi Frank,
I remember having some hard time with flash animation some months ago...
That was solved by exporting images séquence from flash editing software and creating dcp with separate sources - images and sound tracks - through OpenDCP.
At that time I was not aware of dcp-o-matic !

Hi Carl -
Love the DVD (DCP) o matic -
I am making animation on adobe flash - flash doesn't like 24 fps so I am working 25 fps - flash can export my .mov at 25 fps - dvd o matic recognizes the 25 fps. mov and wants to make a 25fps package, but I get this error from dvd o matic after the job is complete (and the projector - NEC 900c) doesn't recognize the package for ingest:
Cannot handle pixel format 30 during make_black().
It is not known what caused this error. The best idea is to report the problem to the DVD-o-matic mailing list (dvdomatic(a)carlh.net)
Earlier attempts where flash made a .mov with a converted frame rate of 18.something worked fine, but the sound was either too slow or too fast depending on what frame rate I select on the dvd o matic settings. It converts the the 18 fps to 24 with roughly a 125% increase in speed -
I just donated to dvd o matic a few days ago - and am very excited to have such an amazing tool at my fingertips -
THANKS FOR YOUR HELP! I'll keep fooling about with frame rates and will let you know if I have any luck -

Hi all,
DCP-o-matic version 1.10 is now available from here:
http://dcpomatic.com/download.php
The main improvement in this version is that it can write encrypted DCPs
and generate KDMs for them. All feedback is welcome.
Best regards
Carl
I'm prepping a trailer for DCP with your software, and got the following error:
Cannot handle pixel format 102 during make_black().
Any ideas about this?

Hello everyone,
I have created four 24- to 32-minute long DCP packages for a friend and
hobby filmmaker who is going to screen them at a local movie festival.
Now, I've heard back from their technical department that the DCPs I
made using DVD-o-matic are single-reel and that "might cause problems",
whatever that means.
As far as I understand it, there is a convention to limit reels to
somewhere around 22 minutes (e.g. typical old "analog" reel size) to
minimize problems in transfer and handling and to keep the sizes of the
files in the DCPs reasonable. But I wouldn't have thought that a
32-minute single-reel DCP might be problematic. Can anyone enlighten me
on the subject? I'm no projectionist or TMS technician (I'm helping my
friend because I have maginally more hobby experience creating DCPs than
him), so there's a huge question mark hanging above my head. :-)
Furthermore, is there any possibility to create multi-reel DCP packages
via DCP-o-matic, or to convert the single-reel packages into multi-reel
using open-source tools?
Thanks for any help in this matter

Hmm, I reported this GAMMA issue before with a BluRay conversion around the beginning of June.
Now I did a parallel conversion of a DV-compressed AVI file to a DVD-Video and a DCP, both on a Mac. While the DVD retains more or less the same contrast and colours as the AVI file, the DCP again came out a lot brighter with greyish blacks (played back on our DCI projector). The BluRay conversion I reported back in june was done with the windows version from a 1:1 rip/MKV container and it had the same issues. I needed to create a special format on the projector reducing brightness and saturation considerably to make it watchable.
Hmm, I now see that DCP-o-matic has an explicit dialog for input/output gamma settings and color conversion matrix. Maybe I will try to do some tests to find out wether these issues can be solved by this. Really wondering why no one else is having this issue, as it is not just a minor variance but a heavy one.

Hello there.
I got an Error when using DVD o matic that looks like so:
Transcode job failed (Cannot handle pixel format 102 during make_black())
The suggestion was to mail it, so here it goes.
The source film is in Prores4444 1920x1080
The audio is external in 6 * PCM 24bit WAV files
No subs yet
(Mac version of DVD o matic because of the Prores source)
I specified the start frame to 3 and end frame to 36875 for a 5 minutes
test. But the encode seems to have run from 0 to 42571 where it stopped.
I wanted to ommit the syncblipp at fram 1 but I can hear it in the file
generated in the DCP_XX-XX.... folder
Any suggestions are appriciated, did I mention that I like DVD o matic a
lot =)

ps" I see now that I had "encode all frames and play the subset" on by
mistake. But does that mean that I will get this error when trying to
encode the entire movie later?

Hello!
Yesterday I made 3 versions of a DCP with a little video, and because
its mono, I wanted to try how it would sound like when the audio is C,
LR and LCR. So I exported a mono uncompressed wav file from Adobe
Premiere. I tried to listen to the file with VLC Player and looked at
the codec (PCM L16 SE) and thought everything was fine. But in the
cinema, the sound was only LR, no matter what, and was pitched down like
crazy. Didn?t sound good at all :)
What did i do wrong? Is there a problem that the video file has audio
too, and i just choosed external audio, is the video file not allowed to
have audio?
And my secound question, I?m not sure what "pad with silence to X
channels" does and what I do with it. It?s not written in the manual.
Can I get a short explanation?
Thanks and greetings from Vienna!
Andi
Hi all,
DVD-o-matic version 0.126 is now available from here:
http://carlh.net/software/dvdomatic/download.php
This fixes a variety of subtle and not-so-subtle bugs
with recent versions. If you are having any problems,
especially related to audio or strange DCP playback,
I suggest you update.
Also, I have started adding some benchmarks of DVD-o-matic's
speed on various computers:
http://carlh.net/software/dvdomatic/benchmarks/
If anyone would like to contribute information (by running
a couple of DCP encodes on their machine), please feel free.
I hope this might help people who are planning to buy new PCs
and who want to know how DVD-o-matic might perform.
Best regards
Carl Hetherington
one of my favourites ;-)
I noticed that while 'encoding the subset' on partial encodings, the space for the resulting file is reduced as intended, but not the encoding time. Seems as if a partial encode will take as much time as a full encode.
Could this be improved? I understand that the encoder needs to run through the whole file at some point, but it seems it will also take the time to encode all frames and just 'discard' the unnecessary ones?
Is this needed to keep video and audio in sync?
(I'm now using the Mac version 0.115, but this is the same under windows)
Also, the DCI naming options include the option to use OV or VF. Is there any way to actually create a VF only or a multipackage, e.g. one OV version, one subtitle version, one localized version, each using the same video file?

Hi all,
DVD-o-matic's next incarnation, "DCP-o-matic" is vaguely on the way. I've
started uploading test versions to a new site:
http://dcpomatic.com/index2.php
If anyone would like to test it out, please feel free. Any feedback is
welcome. Since it has a different name you can install it alongside
DVD-o-matic and it shouldn't interfere with your DVD-o-matic installation.
Best regards

been using it for some light pre show content, with no audio. and it has been working. that you so much for your work on this project. I work for a small art house cinema and it is very important to be able to create our own DCP content. Thank you for making it such a painless process.

Hi all,
I've made a DMG of DVD-o-matic for Mac OS X which seems to work ok on 10.6
and 10.8. I would be grateful if anyone has the time to give it a quick
test on whatever Mac they have around. It's available from here:
http://carlh.net/software/dvdomatic/test-download.php
Any reports (good or bad) are welcome to the mailing list or directly to
me.
Cheers!

Hi there, new problems (and problem solved)
The source file this time was messy. A scanned 16mm documentary from the
past. Sound was mono, but in the source file it was panned hard left in
Dolby AC3 (2-channel). Right was silent.
I pulled the AC3-track, converted it to mono (wav) and put it as external
audio into DVD-o-matic on center channel. The other channels were left
unchecked. DCP seemed OK, ingested fine on Dolby DSS200/220 (4.6.0 (13)) no
problems when selecting it for playback but when hitting play everything
crapped out. "No connection with Cat745", "Transport not available" and so
on.
Wasn´t there something about the allowed number of tracks in a DCP package?
Hm.
New try. This time I made an extra soundtrack with digital silence from the
mono track. Checked every channel in external audio. Sound on center,
silence on the other five. The DCP played just fine.
Would it be possible for DVD-o-matic to automatically create silent tracks
where needed when using external audio?

Hey! First of all, love the work you do.
I encountered the attached error report earlier today when I was trying to convert a 2K .mov file to DCP. Just wanted to let you know about it and any help you can offer would be appreciated.
Thanks and keep up the great work!
Evan
I know the support of image sequences is ToDo list, so I tried to use
a MOV referencing to the folder with the image sequence. Doesn't work
:(
But, same as a self-contained, including sound, works!

Actually it's a six core, HT CPU, but sure it screams. As far as I can see on my machine and as others quoted, HT helps with dvd-o-matic. Can you share some numbers on encoding speed?
I was thinking about AMDs as well because you get more cores for less money, but it seems they can not be used as efficiently as with Intels.
Also, the machine may well be used for various other types of video decoding/encoding, editing, AVCHD, h.264 - and from Sandybridge on, the Intels have some extremely fast video acceleration features to aid in these tasks.

I'm new to using DVD-O-MATIC, it's a great product, I'm running it on an
older system:
Windows 7 32bit
Intel P8600 2.4 GHz CPU
4 GB RAM
It's taking between 2-3 hours to convert a 15-30 minute movie/short, Is
this average, I'm looking at upgrading to a quad core i7 processor with
32GB of RAM running Windows 7 64bit. I'm guessing this should speed up my
conversion time quite a bit, but curious what others are seeing before I
invest the money in this.
Thanks in Advance.
Today I had to play a commercial BluRay, converted to DCP with MakeMKV and DVD-o-matic (0.89). It turned out much too bright on our Sony SRX-R515. This is a fairly new installation and the calibration is certainly perfect, I never see any issues on commercial DCPs and trailers.
Initially I thought this was just a Gamma issue, but I found out that on this machine the Gamma for DCI content is already maxed out at 2.6, I can only set it lower.
It was a straight conversion, no intermediate conversion, no filters, I chose REC709 in DVD-o-matic, and on the Sony projector our standard flat DCI preset.
It wasn't subtle - about 30% of the movie showed decent contrast, most other brighter scenes were very milky, and in darker scenes shadows were torn into noisy dark green and blue.
Detail was very good actually, I chose a no-rescale conversion (flat no stretch).
This projector actually has a brightness, contrast and color saturation slider. Usually I never touch these things, because on a properly calibrated machine everything should be okay after the calibration. The DCI flat preset had these sliders in their default positions, which were 100 for contrast, 50 for brightness, 50 for saturation.
I could actually fix the problem by reducing brightness to 30 and reducing colour saturation to 45. I played the BluRay in parallel to the HDMI input configured to REC709, switched back and forth and it matched quite well. I did not have more time for perfection, there was still a slight color shift between the two, but it was okay.
I guess I will have to send my BluRay calibration disc through the same conversion to find out what is going on there.
Any ideas?

Hi all,
DVD-o-matic version 0.95 is now available from
http://carlh.net/software/dvdomatic/download.php
This release fixes various bugs. No big new features to speak of. The
Mac version is coming along nicely: just a few fixes to the installer and
we shall be ready to go!
A late candidate has appeared for DVD-o-matic's name change: I am
pondering (drum roll please)
"DCP magic"
Any opinions?

Did anyone have the same experience:
I was checking the trim feature yesterday with specially made test footage - an MP4 file with frame accurate numbers counting from 1 to 300, white numbers on black background. On my sandybridge notebook, it converted at around 4fps, no special processing (1998*1080 in, 1998*1080 out). With real word footage (but also a large number of black frames at the beginning), I only get around 1fps conversion speed, sometimes even below that.
Is the J2k compression speed depending on content complexity or target datarate?
I could see in the log that the MXF frame write intervals reflected these different conversion speeds perfectly. Both files on local disc. Will need to do some more testing.
I have a large project with a lot of partial/trimmed conversions ahead.
Carl - when using encode servers, I guess the main dvd-o-matic server will send uncompressed still images to the remote J2k encode servers? That's why a Gigabit network is beneficial?

Hello again,
I just encountered another problem with DVDom; I had a source file where
the audio is a little too loud. Thus I entered a negative value in
"Audio Gain" on the Audio Tab. Promply, DVDom (both the full gui and the
batch encoder) crash as soon as the conversion is started. I could
reproduce this behaviour with four different Quicktime sources with the
value "-10", so I guess this happens every time I enter "-10", at least
with quicktime source files.
Did I do something wrong? Should I do something different to tone done
the audio during conversion? As before, any help is appreciated.
Greetings from Germany

Hello all,
I recently tried to cut a bit from the beginning an end of an mp4 source
file in DVD-o-matic, which did not seem to work correctly.
For my first try, I entered the start and end frame numbers (as seen
below the video windows of DVD-o-matic) of the part I wanted to encode
and "encode all frames and play the subset" as method. This resulted in
the whole file being converted, just as if I didn't enter anything.
For my second try, I entered the number of frames I wanted to cut from
the beginning and the end of the video and selected "encode only the
subset". Now, the *audio* was cut at the right point, but the video
played from the beginning again.
Additionally, I saved the project and loaded it at a later time. Now,
the "Start" and "End" fields were set to "100" each, which bears no
resemblance to what I had input into the fields before saving (750 and
251, respectively).
How is this trimming supposed to work? What do I have to enter into the
fields to get 750 frames cut from the beginning and 251 frames cut from
the end? Any help is appeciated.
Greetings from Germany
Kasi Mir
BTW - we discussed this shortly before - now that the Indiegogo campaign is over, wouldn't it be time to rename dvd-o-matic to something like 'dcp-o-matic'? Or will you wait until v1.0? ;-)

Hi all,
I tried for the first time to convert a bluray stream to a dcp.
This file contains coloured subtitles for deaf people.
dvd-o-matic does not seem to convert the colours correctly. White and
green are ok, but the others are changed.
I took Carsten's sample to author a simple bluray structure. Here is the
m2ts stream:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/1y6i3a27o81x7pc/count300bd24.m2ts
Not a priority issue as external subtitle is preferred, but I noticed it
testing the subtitle management.

One way to get simple and configurable audio is to have a matrix-mixer.
Example: mix a 2-channel old movie to the correct center mono. Adhere to
Academy rules, which is 3-channel mix.

Example: an ordinary 2-channel stereo to 5.1 without any mixing.

It might be good to grey out or not draw the input channels that are not
available.
With this it can also be possible to do matrix-decoding from 2-channel
sources.

There are 2 different settings for number of threads used on encoding
servers, both in the encoding server (-t option) and in the main encoder
gui along with the IP-address.
I'd hope it would be possible to set it only in one place, preferably on
the server side. The main encoder could ask how many threads are set up,
and act accordingly. The main encoder would only need to know the
IP-addresses of the servers. This would also make it possible to change
number of threads used on a server on-the-fly without restarting the main
encoder.
Is there a limitation on number of servers? If so, how many and why?
Couldn't find this in the manual.

Hi all,
I've made a new mailing list, "dvdomatic-announce". If you'd rather
receive just announcements about new DVD-o-matic versions (and such like),
feel free to join that list instead of the standard DVD-o-matic list.
I'll send announcements about new versions to both lists.
I can switch you over if it would be easier; just drop me a line

Like adding some formats that includes the cropping. Actually, I
always use "Flat without stretch", I consider the rest Advanced use.
Maybe some direct acces to ffmpeg parameters? instead on growing the
formats list to infinity.
Already got a couple of Scope inside a 1920x1080, and I expect to get
many more like that. And for SD material (old short films) I would
expect 16:9 inside 4:3 and even scope inside 4:3 (oh yes, got that in
a DV file last week)
Thanks!

Here are my thoughts on what frame-rate conversion should do in DVD-o-matic
* 23.976fps or 24fps -> 25fps Change video timing. Audio resampling with
selectable quality.
* 25fps -> 24fps Change video timing. Audio resampling with selectable
quality.
* 50i fps -> Deinterlace with selectable filters: linear blend, motion
compensate etc. Then consider 24fps or 25fps destination as above.
Optionally, bob or YADIF might be good to produce a proper 48p or 50p film.
* 59.94i or 60i fps -> Deinterlace with selectable filters, for example
Bob, linear blend Suggest 30fps as destination since a proper inverse
telecine requires manual work and should be done in another program. A
selectable inverse telecine can save someones day, but be warned... Again,
bob or YADIF might be good to produce a proper 60p film. Audio resampling
when required, with selectable quality.
Never add or drop frames unless inverse telecining.
Audio stretching without changing pitch in my ears is a pain to get right,
so should be done in a controlled fashion, not automatically. But it won't
hurt (much) to have an option, right?
A lot (most?) of Swedish DVD-releases from film does a simple 24fps ->
25fps speed-up of video with simple, high-quality resampling of the audio.
Not many people notice the pitch-error.
/Adam Klotblixt
Carl - why don't you enable 'real' 23,97 edit rates? I think most servers allow it now, and it would avoid audio resampling on 23,97fps features.
I see 23,97fps quite often nowadays, I think it is okay to use it as DCP edit rates?
- Carsten
I did a conversion yesterday, from an old dvcam. Good news is that
dvd-o-matic likes raw dv-files just fine. Might be good to add that info
somewhere?
/Adam Klotblixt
I've just reaquainted myself with the wonderful world of Avisynth, and also
the Linux version Avxsynth. Unfortunately, DVD-o-matic does not open the
.avs file under win7, haven't tried in Linux yet.
Any chance of getting support for this type of files?

Hi all,
DVD-o-matic version 0.89 is now available from
http://carlh.net/software/dvdomatic/download.php
This adds a simple batch converter for setting multiple conversion jobs

With 3 weeks to go, the Indiegogo campaign to fund a Mac OS X version of
DVD-o-matic is half-way there! Thanks to all who have pledged money,
and/or spread the word about the campaign. If you can think of anyone
else who might be interested in hearing about it, or putting up some cash,
then do let them know.

Good day!
One of the theatres I'm involved with is in need of a preview for a special booking we have upcoming, and the only one we had access to in a reasonable format was in 60 FPS, but since this preview is to be used with a DSS100/DSP100 which does not like anything but 24 FPS, I was attempting to use DVD-o-matic 0.87 x64 Windows version (I have also tried earlier versions before now to the same effect) to change it to 24 FPS, and the outcome was that the audio sounded at least an octave lower. As it is important for our managers to be able to do this with a minimum of fuss and perhaps as streamlined a process as possible, I was wondering if there was something I was doing wrong, or if there is a process to follow for such things. I have found this to be an issue for me before now, but I was hoping that perhaps it was simply that I have done something in error.
Also, I was noticing that when I'm converting some video into DCP, DVD-o-matic will change the audio (for 23.976 FPS or 24 FPS, 44.1kHz is adjusted to 48kHz (doesn't seem to sound odd), for 29.97 FPS to 24 FPS, 44.1 kHz is adjusted to 59940Hz (becomes a lower octave, which I cannot use, 30 FPS to 24 FPS takes the audio from 44.1kHz to 60kHz (can't use), and finally 59.94 FPS to 24 FPS changes the audio from 44.1kHz to 59940Hz (also cannot use - deeper again) ( I would have thought that the 60 FPS would be even higher than 30 FPS).) Is there a reason that even if the video is at the frame rate I want, the sound still gets adjusted, and if I'm changing the frame rate, the audio resample goes up, but the sound becomes deeper? I would have thought the sound would becoming more shrill, if anything.
Again, I love this program, and the efforts being put into it is amazing, and I'm willing to assume I'm messing something up. I just would like it if I didn't need to use a different program to 'pre-adjust' frame rates to get the audio to sound like the original.
Thank you for all the work you do,
Leslie Hartmier

There is a point in it - but on the other hand, insisting on DCP, and at the same time forcing a 60p-24p conversion is, well, stupid, as the latter guarantees either judder or extreme slowdown. Of course, a 30->24 slowdown may look 'pleasing' at first, because it smoothes out motion, but it simply should not be accepted for a professional presentation.
Whatever, if there will be no compromise on other playback options, then you should probably go the mentioned way with an external samplerate and timestretching adjustment.

Yesterday I tried to make my first DCP with subtitles that were not burnt
into the source file. It didn´t work out that well, the swedish translation
was lost in the process. Yes, the checkbox "with subtitles" was filled. Am
I doing something wrong or is DVD-o-matic unable to extract subtitles from
this source file?
The source file (.mkv) origins from the sub-DCI distribution system used
for documentarys and art house movies in Sweden until now.
Source file tested on a Tvix Slim S1 running 2.1.0, subtitles visible on
screen.
DCP file tested on Dolby DSS220/IMB Cat745/Barco DP2K-10s, no subtitles on
screen. DSS220 running 4.5.4 (2).
DVD-o-matic ver. 0.80 (as I remember)
Magnus Eriksson
Zita, Stockholm
Attached: Mediainfo from the source file.
If the conversion 'looks' okay at 24fps, maybe you should try to convert the audio separately. You might run into sync issues, but it still is worth a try.
You could use Audacity's resampling features to make separate audiotracks, then use the separate audio feature of DVD-o-matic. The resampling/sampling rate conversion parameters of course need to be adjusted to match DVD-o-matics framerate handling. But maybe Carl will find a flaw in the conversion you tried.
When do you need this finished and what is your source footage format?

This having caused us trouble (and lost bookings), we simply were told by the company's owner, it must be made into DCP. Using off-the-shelf Blu-rays/DVDs, I recall we've never had a failure on that, but of course, we don't have any of those, just indie filmmakers with their burned disks (some pressed, but same problem, oddly). Media players and computers seem to work fine (most of the time), but they're inelegant at times.

Hi all,
DVD-o-matic version 0.87 is now available from
http://carlh.net/software/dvdomatic/download.php
This version makes the "trim-encode" feature work, so that you can trim
videos and not have to encode the bits you aren't using.
Best regards
Carl Hetherington
Hello everyone,
first of all, thanks for the great program, I tried before to create DCP
packages with other free toolchains before, but this one makes it really
easy.
I have a small question, I'm using the Windows version on a standalone
PC (no additional encoding servers), by the way.
I'd like to be able to create conversion jobs which aren't started right
away, but rather be put into a batch for later use, as I often convert
half a dozen videos at once. At the moment, I configure the first job,
then Select "Make DCP", then configure the next job, select "Make DCP"
again, an so on.
The trouble is: after selecting "Make DCP" for the first time, the
encoding (naturally) starts right away, which means that many GUI
controls of DVD-o-matic don't respond anymore. What I'd like to do is
create all jobs, and then after I'm finished with them, start the encoding.
So far, I haven't found any way to do this. Did I miss something (which
is perfectly possible), or did I actually just make a feature
suggestion? ;-)

Hi all,
DVD-o-matic version 0.84 is now available from
http://carlh.net/software/dvdomatic/download.php
This fixes a few bugs:
* Sound missing from the start of some films
* Incorrect frame rates on re-loading films under some locales
* Error messages on startup when forcing the language to English
It also adds a simple frame counter and frame back/forward buttons, uses a
more accurate ratio for 4:3 conversions and derives its MXF filenames from
the name of the film.
Best regards
Carl Hetherington
Hi Carl
Yes - all the folders except the completed DCP could be deleted for normal
use. Not a priority, but would be neater in the way I use the software!
Cheers

It would be nice, and there does seem to be some evidence to suggest that
a speed-up is possible. If openjpeg did it, DVD-o-matic could use it very
easily. Sadly I don't really have the time to get into it myself just
now.
As it stands, more CPU wins!

Hi all,
I don't think integrating the Kakadu encoder would be a big problem, but
it would probably only be worth it if significant numbers of DVD-o-matic
users have a licence ... I'm not sure how widespread that is.

Hi Paul
Sorry for the slight delay, my email threw a wobbler and I only just
received this.
> Firstly, have you made any progress on displaying the frame number under the video image?
Not yet, I'm afraid. I'd forgotten to add it to the tracker, but it's
there now! I will get onto it.

Which particular folders do you mean? The audio/video/info and so on?

Carl
Hi Carl,
nice work. Used a few other DCP creating tools before, was a bit sceptical at first about your 'all-in-one-converter'. However, great functionality in a single package, and, most important for me, all processing/conversion steps for video and audio explained and documented.
Now, I'm using the most recent version 0.83/64bit Windows. Seems the Trim frames feature doesn't work. Whatever numbers I dial in for Start/End, it will always create the full length DCP from my 1:31:42 source. All dialogs show these 137564 frame count (also 'Properties'). Currently I have Start 1 and End 100, but it's creeping through the full 90mins of footage.
The trim parameters do not show up in the log file. Should they?

Hi all,
I put up an indiegogo page to see if we can raise some money for a Mac OS
X port of DVD-o-matic. If you are interested, head to:
www.indiegogo.com/projects/dvd-o-matic-on-mac-os-x
Feel free to post any questions about that to the list or directly to me.
Best regards

Hi all,
DVD-o-matic version 0.83 is now available from
http://carlh.net/software/dvdomatic/download.php
It fixes a few bugs with padded formats and adds an option to scale to
16:9 within a Scope frame.
Best regards
Carl Hetherington
Hi Carl
Firstly, have you made any progress on displaying the frame number under the
video image?
And secondly, a new request, is it possible to have the option for the
temporary folders to be automatically deleted at the end of creating a DCP
(perhaps an option on the preferences menu)? It would make life a bit
easier when the main folder is for ingesting to our server.
Keep up the great work!
Paul

First post to this mailing-list. yay!
DVD-o-matic is a very nice program, that I hope will grow to be even
greater. I will try to help by raising some discussions.
Something I thought might improve on the DCP-size is to enable
quality-based JPEG2000-encoding. OpenJPEG has an option to do this (-q
according to documentation), with a value in decibels.
Does the DCP-standard accept VBR-files? My web-search found no definitive
answer.
