Ah! the vagaries of using non-standard ratios when the projectors are setup to disguise
natural physics problems at only two configurations. The image smiles back at you!
Producers don’t understand the implications when they make those artistic decisions early
on.
This should be more widely distributed:

Can you take a picture of the "corner curve" you are seeing. I am guessing this
is an optical issue by maybe projecting in a configuration the projector is not setup to
do. This might be by playing a DCP with a non-standard aspect.

If it's a 1.78:1 image inside boxing you just need to set the "crop"
controls in DCP-o-matic to remove the boxing. That way, DoM will scale
the actual image rather than also scaling your boxing.
So: crop to remove boxing, scale to 1.78:1, DCI flat container should do
it.

Hi Carl,
Yes the film files do have boxing - does this change things?
Thanks,

There shouldn't really ever be any problems with edges, unless the
projector itself is set up in some odd way.
If a film is shot in 1.78:1 and you have a source file with no
letterboxing or pillarboxing you would set the "scale to" to 1.78:1, the
container to "flat (1.85:1)" and that's it. The film should play back
using the projector's DCI flat preset without any distortion.
Can you send the full name of the DCP you made? It has details of the
aspect ratios in it. You can send it to me privately if you'd rather.
Kind regards,
Carl

Hi Carl,
From what I gather (and I am just a beginner) - I may have created a DCP
into a 1.78:1 when it should have been 2.39:1 . Would this cause a
strange angular edge to the bottom right hand corner?
If a film is shot in 1.178:1 - do you need to have that as the setting for ‘scale
to:’? and should I ever adjust the container on DCPomatic?
Thanks,
James

Hi James,
That's strange. Are you saying that you are making a 1.78:1 DCP and it is
being projected in 2.39:1?
Kind regards,
Carl

Hi,
Thanks so much for the free software - I will make sure we donate towards it.
I do have a question regarding the making of DCPs - we are struggling with
creating them for a cinema. The bottom right hand side of the DCP
when
projected on to
the screen curves up a little.
Could this be to do with not converting the DCP into the correct ratio or the
fact the cinema has a curved screen?
For example a 1.78 ratio DCP has been made into 2.39 scope as I thought it
selected them automatically.
I hope you can help me understand.
Best,
James
