So are you saying SMTP is normally OK but occasionally I may need to generate a DCP if someone has a old server (although I guess they would want ot upgrade as they will not be able to play new commercial DCPs).

Tiny note there:

There are Interop and SMPTE KDMs. Interop KDM is deprecated. While you could find systems which expect Interop KDM if you look very hard you need to generate SMPTE KDM for both Interop and SMPTE DCPs.
