Hi Carl,
you certainly already had some thoughts about how the transition to v2 should happen some
day? Share your ideas how 1.x and 2.x could grow together? How many essentials do they
share currently?
Hi Carsten,
I had hoped to shift all development to V2 before now, but with one
thing and another it hasn't happened. The main thing about V2 is the
internal code is better structured, but it also has a few new
features.
My main concern is how many new bugs have been introduced by the
rearrangements to the code. I do as much regression testing as I
can, but I can't realistically hope to catch everything. The standard
problem is that not enough people will test V2 until it is released,
at which point too many people will test it :)
My current plan is to fix the bugs marked targeted at 2.1.0 (in Mantis)
and then see if we can get some beta testing going on it. After this I
would hope to phase out V1 and at some point make V2 the "main"
download.
I have also considered putting a tempting feature in V2 only to get
more testers, but the only real candidate for that is GPU acceleration
which is still an unknown quantity in terms of required development
time.
Any suggestions that anyone has on a good way to proceed would be
welcome.
There are still some quite significant reworkings of V2 going on so
it's not time for serious testing yet.
Regards,
Carl
