This changed a bit over time for the different platforms. Don't know how the different
OSs handle version numbers, for Mac OS X, v1.x is a separate app which is overwritten only
by following v1.x updates, and v2.x updates only overwrite v2. I think in OS X that is
simply a matter of the name of the app package.
Same behaviour for windows - neither version does care about the other one. Except maybe
for prefs.
