Yes it is indeed a uncompressed master in HD. The h264 version that is
also available for us is 120MB and the YUV422 is about 9GB for the
shortfilm in question ;)
Speaks for rec709 (h264). He probably just chose two different output formats from his
editing application, and aimed for ‚as many bits as possible, and uncompressed‘ with the
AVI version.
There are certainly apps that do allow to do weird things, but YUV is the native domain of
rec601(SD) or rec709 (HD). He probably watched both versions on a computer and found them
‚acceptable‘, so, I’d go ahead with rec709 and have him watch it, either in a cinema, or
on a DCP player or within DCP-o-matic.
Having precise source definitions verified on a calibrated viewing system is obviously
always favorable, but very often all we get is ‚It was perfect on my monitor at home‘.
