Hi there,
I am new to DCP's and this list,–very likely like many others before–having been
thrust into this world by the need to deliver a film to a movie theater in their preferred
format.
Above all my monster is a little over two hours long, with a 5.1 soundtrack ;-)
Being a Mac person (up to this point…) I got a trial version of a commercial player to
test DCP playback. Waiting for my refurbished renering machine that can run Windows I also
signed up for digitAll dcpPlayerFree, but what I realised is that I would not need so much
functionality for peace of mind.
Would it be possible to create a free DCP-player that read a buffer of like say 5-10 sec
worth of images and sound, generated a temporary movie file for playback using a local
architecture, like QuickTime on the Mac, and then played the segment? The user would use
the slider to determine where to start.
The great advantage would be that one could check the file from within DCP-o-matic,
including encrypted media, which is a function reserved for the pricy commercial players.

without creating a temporary file. You can basically scroll through the whole DCP and play
contiguous 20s chunks between demo reminders. It also has a multichannel VU meter for

There are both Mac AND Windows trial versions on that page. Give the Mac version a go. It
works with reduced J2k layer/resolution even on my old C2D MacBook running 10.6.8.
So far, doing J2K realtime is not easy for CPU only applications. There are no open-source
solutions, or modules to use GPU enabled encoding. We are all waiting for that to show up.
Some people are working on it, but progress is slow.

Yes, very nice! Having the ability to peek into different parts of the movie is great. The
Fraunhofer Player only does the beginning.

Once you feel familiar with the whole process of creating the DCP, there is no need to
'test' encryption. The pitfalls of using encrypted DCPs can not be resolved on
your local player - it is with the specific cinema installation your DCP is meant to be
played on. Encryption in DCP-o-matic is just a tick in the DCP tab. The crucial thing is
to get the right certificates for the target system. You can not test this with a local
player.
Yes, you are right in that, when you want to create a full length feature and deliver it
encrypted to a cinema, it will most likely be a two-step process - first creating an
unencrypted version which you can test on your local machine for peace of mind, then
create the encrypted version again for the cinema. Yes, it would be nice to do this in a
one-step process. But there simply is no free software to do it.

I am about to test drive this for a local movie theater.
In the DCP-folder there are two files with the ending “_pkl.xml” and “_cpl.xml.” Am I
right in assuming I don’t give them to the theater? One or both of them is probably used
by DCP-o-matic to generate the KPM’s, right?

You have to provide the whole folder created by DCO-o-matic.
It should contain at least 6 files: two .mxf files (image and sound),
one ASSETMAP, one PKL, one CPL and one VOLINDEX.

Are you building an encrypted package?
You have to provide the folder YourFilm_FTR...
The keys are stored in another folder.

In the Menubar, there is an item 'Show DCP' - this will open your project folder
and highlight the last version of the DCP you created, with a folder name you created
under the DCP tab. This folder contains the DCP you should give to the cinema. Please
adhere to the ISDCF naming convention - once you have set preferences properly, this is
not much work to maintain.
