Carsten, thanks *loads* for the software recommendations. I will give
these a go in next few days and will report back.
DVDFab is available on Mac, but looks like only the Windows version
supports converting from MVC 3D to side-by-side which DCP-o-matic would
be able to work with. Ergh have been Mac & Linux so long, the thought of
dealing with Windows makes me shudder! But hey, beggers cannot as they
say be choosers.
Carl - yes, I assumed lack of support for MVC in FFMPEG was what
prevented DCP-o-matic from "seeing" the right eye stream. From what
little I read, it doesn't sound like support is likely to be added any
time soon either - apparently the MVC encoding is quite "deep" in the
codec structure so adding support would require extensive changes across
FFMPEG codebase. Given that MVC is pretty niche, it's unlikely to be
considered worth the effort. That's the impression I got anyway.
By the way, when I say DOM or VLC can't "see" the right eye stream, I
mean the video plays fine in the usual way, but it appears simply as a
2D video with only the left eye image appearing. The data for right eye
is simply passed over, as if it wasn't there. It isn't listed as a
separate stream in DOM, FFprobe or VLC. In fact, when I say "stream",
I'm using the wrong word anyway - it's not a separate stream in the
usual sense, since the right eye image data is encoded as a diff from
the left eye. It's more like a stream within a stream. Very unusual!
Anyway thanks as ever to both of you for swift and very helpful
responses. Will report back when I've figured it out.
Many thanks,
Jim

I know that some people have been successful in
ripping 3D BDs, and converting them with DOM. They may have used an intermediate step to
conform the 3D codec into something that DOM can deal with. I have to inquire with these
folks...
It turns out that three options did work:
http://www.dvdfab.cn/ - will rip to formats that DOM directly supports
These two will convert MVC files to suitable intermediate files (e.g. separate L/R
files):
