Hi Carl- I'm not sure what's going on with the DCP-o-matic scaling options....If I am converting a Scope source, and if I select Scope format, the picture is too wide. (Stretched horizontally). If I select Scope without stretch, then the picture is the right shape, but doesn't fill the container. It's about half the size it should be. The only way I can seem to get the picture to fill the container side-to-side and not be distorted is to set both the DCP format and the video format options to 16:9... but, playing that back on the Scope setting of the projector results in a picture that's slightly smaller than it should be. If I convert a flat movie, it comes out perfect every time. I feel like I've gotta be missing something but am not sure what it could be. One other issue, which might be the fault of the source material but I'm not sure -- I converted Star Wars Episode IV, which contains a short segment which has subtitles. The subtitles did not come thru on the DCP. I can't imagine why this is...you would think they'd be hard-burned to the image, considering they need to be played with the movie. Any idea why this might have happened? I wonder if there's a setting in the MKV program that might affect this? Thanks - Mike Blakesley

All later issues are the remastered/'enhanced' versions. Scaling a 4:3 letterboxed scope to DCI scope is technically possible by using cropping as Manuel explains, but I wouldn't dare to do it, the resolution is just too low for any decent screen size. Even if it is not this particular Episode IV DVD - Scope and Flat exist on consumer media ONLY in the form of letterboxed content. So technically, the black bars are always part of the image, and unless you mask them out during the projection, need to be cropped away in DCP-o-matic. DVD can be native 4:3 or 16:9, while Bluray is ALWAYS 16:9 with all other aspect ratios obtained using letterboxing or pillarboxing. Mike - the subtitles on DVDs are usually NOT burned in and will not be transferred with the picture automatically. But you can use a DVD Ripper which grabs the subtitles with the image into separate tracks of an MKV container. DCP-o-matic is then able to burn these titles into the picture with the DCP conversion if needed. - Carsten

But I think we need to accept that there is no easy way to do it - there are simply to many constraints to follow, and the nature of much content being letterboxed doesn't allow for too much choices being done automatically. Maybe there is a way to describe the scaling options in a straighter way, but we will never get away from a choice of aspect ratio numbers in a table. Some things simply need knowledge to be done properly. Maybe Carl can overlay a Flat, CS and 16:9/1080p grid in the preview window? I always find the visual reference of the preview window helpful. - Carsten
