Currently, DCP-o-matic maxes out at 12 audio channels (which is fine ;-) ). The channel
number is set under DCP properties. Will this actually create a 12ch BWF/MXF in the DCP,
or will more than 8ch always create a 16ch BWF/MXF with unused channel padded with
silence?
Wondering wether 10/12/14ch BWF/MXF are allowed at all...

Hi,
something like Dolby Atmos probably makes use of (almost) all available
channels.
16 channels were initially intended by DCI to make enough room for
future sounds evolution (and probably other datas object-oriented in
case of Atmos)
As 96khz for sound sampling - which I've never seen so far in "regular"
DCP - gives ability to "double" channels by algorythm sub-sampling process.

Atmos uses a very different approach, they only include a sync track (DCI channel 14). The
ATMOS audio itself comes as a separate MXF file which is not even covered by current
DCI/SMPTE.
So far the maximum channel count in a regular DCP would be something like a 7.1 mix + 2
HI/VI tracks + maybe a DBOX seat track, so, like 12ch max.
Auro 3D has it's additional height channels hidden in the LSBs of a conventional 24Bit
5.1 audio mix.
BTW - SMPTE DCPs/KDMs now have options to disable audio watermarking in the media block
for specific track numbers that contain 'data type audio', like the ATMOS sync
tracks. The watermarking could otherwise render these tracks useless.
There was a discussion on 96KHz audio in DCPs on the ISDCF mailing list recently. It seems
it has never been used so far, quite a few servers/processors actually can not deal with
it it seems. A lot of servers seem to default to subsampling 96KHz tracks to 48KHz for
output.

what if the way - if there's one - to include subtitles from DVD into DCP ?
Distributor sent me a DVD as no DCP exists for the feature film.
The DVD is good quality, done from remastered original material.
Any thoughts ?

the original master, and you may have some 'concerns' regarding the image. If the
distributor had a Blu-ray, you may find an improved quality to your DCP.
I know, nothing to do with subtitles, but sometimes, we need reminding of the little
things.

Well you're both very right.
Some reasons I'd rather play a DCP, even made from DVD :
- I have to project that dvd in subtitled original version and I have no
option in my dvd player to resize those subtitles,
- external sources are not controlled nor scheduled by the TMS and this
projection includes two features for one show,
- the quality won't get worst neither better (until now I've never heard
complains about the many DCPs I've projected,
- I'm quite geek and so curious about the result I'll get ;-)
Anyway I highly appreciate any comments and pieces of advice, thanx :-)

In a commercial theater, having as much content as possible projected
in DCP is just the best option. Mainly, due to easiness of operation,
because for the staff it becomes just another film.
About quality, I didn't expect to see any difference, but the 8 bit
color in the single link vs. 12 bit color in the dual link is actually
visible. My reference is from the same file projected with a laptop
and as a dcp. With a dvd, the difference will also came from the
quality of the scaler in the dvd player output versus ffmpeg.
For automation, it's actually possible to control dvd players, or
computers. In an art movie theater, projecting lots of dvd, and before
dvdomatic was really useful, I controlled the dvd players with an
arduino directly connected by usb to doremi, it recognizes it as a
serial device, and with a simple IR led. If someone is interested I
will be happy to share details. It's theoretically possible to control
many things through raw tcp messages too.
Of course, dcps are much easier to control.
I don't like the subtitles being burnt in by dvdomatic, but it gets
the job done.

the job done.
I am working on making that better (slowly). One problem is
that DVD subtitles are images, so you need some OCR to get them
as text for a DCP.

They are always images: BMP for DVD and PNG for Blu-Ray.
The dvd/bd player or a software render them as they are embedded. The
only thing that can be done is resizing or changing the position.
