Okay, got a first grip on subtitles, was never able to do much testing on this, but after
teaching myself the simple Subrip format, I am able now to create test files for various
issues.
Now, the 'Show' Option under the Subtitle tab opens a nice list of the titles.
I'm wondering wether it would be too much work to actually transform this table
display into a basic editor? All one needs would be to create/delete/edit entries in
start/stop/content columns, nothing fancy...
I know most people will prefer external 'real' Subtitle editors for doing
substantial subtitle work, but having a simple editor to clean up glitches or create
individual titles would still be nice, no?

BTW - Carl, what is the language input field being used for under the Subtitle tab? It
seems I can only input a language code there, but it doesn't seem to be reflected in
the ISDCF name created? Does it have a meaning with SRT files at all?

Alright, I can answer that myself now: DCP-o-matic put's that language code as a tag
into the resulting XML file (for Interop subtitles - and I suppose 'somwhere' in
the subtitle MXF file for SMPTE DCPs):
'<Language>DE</Language>'
Also, when importing such tagged XML subtitle-files, the language code field is
populated/displayed from this tag. Wondering wether it is safe to create/set the ISDCF
name details from it directly if present?

That would be good indeed! Just checking later like every other
automatic guessing, a lot of it in dcpomatic.
The most interesting tool for subtitles in dom for me are the
framerate conversion, already implemented, and the option to apply an
offset, never used a trim with dom and subtitles but I suspect it
works?
I'm one of those that will use an external editor for any correction.
But having already the nice window with the list... why not? Vertical
and horizontal position selection there too? with the preview can be a
killer feature ;)

OK ok, I stop adding requests... Right now I'm subtitling in Geneva at
the FIFDH, so I'm quite receptive to subtitling thingies.
BTW, the ASS format support is really interesting, many formatting
options available.

Now that I got a grip on it, it is actually fun, as setting up a basic SRT File in a text
editor is very easy, and after creating an Interop-DCP, you get a 'real' XML file
from it to play with.
The fact that you can set up and play/preview subtitles on a black canvas without any
other content makes it very easy to start with it. I just created two SRT files, one in
english, one in german, and played around with them in order to try a bi-lingual
subtitles. And it works, you can arrange multiple subtitle files either in sequence
(->offset), or disable 'keep video and subtitles in sequence' and arrange two
SRT files in parallel in the timeline editor. Adjust the vertical offset for one, and you
can play two different languages above each other. Nice and easy...
The editor is a nice idea - just that I forgot these changes have to be stored somewhere.
What should DCP-o-matic write to after an original external files content has been
altered? Modify the original file? Create a new one? Which format, where/how to store it?
Add all possible XML tags to the editor?

quite considerably, even if you only made small changes. This would
mean that you probably wouldn't want to overwrite the original file.
You could save the modified file somewhere in the project, but things
could well get quite confusing.
