Hi Carl,
I am using the DCP-omatic to convert my film for a festival. I'm having a
bit of trouble and hope you can help me.
It was shot in 30fps, but the programs says that is an unusual frame rate.
Should I change it to 24, and if so, do I just change it under the DCP tab?
I want to make sure the video quality won't be compromised. But it sounds
like it's okay to leave it at 30, from what I've heard.
The program is also advising that I create an SMPTE DCP instead of an
interop, because of the frame-rate. What is the difference? Should I do
that?
Also, under the DCP tab, I set the container to 16:9, but the program is
saying if possible to put it in scope or flat, but those aren't the right
size of my film, and leave those black edges on the sides of the picture.
Please help me if you could. I've been working on this for a few days, and
have to complete it soon for it to show in the festival.

There is no clean way to convert 30fps to 24fps. As such, you will probably need to stay
with 30fps, and create a SMPTE DCP. I guess you are pretty safe with a 30fps DCP, most
systems should be able to play it.
I guess your footage is in 1920/1080 without any inherent letterboxing, that is, 16:9 full
frame?
I would suggest you scale to 16:9/1.78, and choose a flat container. You will have some
black bars left and right that way, but you will have them in anyway in typical cinemas
since, even when you play a 16:9 container, the black bars will be there. No big deal. You
could do a full frame scale to flat, but that will crop away some image from top and
bottom.
Cinema presentation is special. Depending on the specifics of the venue your film is
presented at, you will either see these issues, or not. Depends on projector type,
masking, etc.

As Carsten said.
SMPTE 30 fps, and most probably DCP-o-matic already guessed the proper
scale to 16:9.
The 16:9 container can be problematic in the real world. The option is even
removed in the most recent versions of DCP-o-matic.
The black bars are actually a confirmation that your source file is encoded
and will be projected pixel to pixel to the original.
As Carsten says, this is normal, and in many venues you wont even be able
to see that black. And festival venues may even be ready for 1080 content!
All kind of festivals out there...
For the sound you can try to make sure that it was mixed for cinema (-20db
reference). The projectionist will be really thankful, and your film will
sound exactly as you expect it to.
