hello,
I recently created a DCP of my short film, but when I play it, the video
stutters by a LOT. I'm running a high end PC (Windows 7), playing the file
off a SSD. I'm trying to figure out asap if its an issue of my PC, the
player I'm using or the DCP file itself. The player is called DigitAll DCP
Player, and I'm awaiting a response from them on the issue. If its only an
issue of the player, I should be fine since I'm sure the venue at the
festival will have good enough hardware. If it's an issue with the DCP file
though, I really need this figured out in time for next week.

at a lower resolution? Playing back at half size drops the required CPU
power.

Data rate is at about 140 mbits/s

Ok, yeah it wasn't the file itself. It played fine when I lowered the
playback resolution. So now the issue I'm having is I keep seeing a green
and purple hue in every shot. Kind of like a chromenance thing? I'm not
entirely sure if its the color format or an issue with the player, or an
issue with color grading in the film itself. But I've never noticed this
before. But attached is a screenshot from the film. if you look at the
walls and his face you can see what I mean. It's like green and purple
blotches. I'm new to color formats and dcp's as well, so this is a steep
learning experience for me.

Is that still though the DigitAll Player, or through Stereoscopic player?
Proper color rendering is dependent on wether the player does a reverse color
transformation, xyz->RGB and proper gamma. DCI servers/projectors do the proper color
conversion from DCP automatically. Some software players don't do that, or, it has to
be enabled explicitly.
The DigitAll Player has this function. However, to be certain about color rendering, you
definitely need to go to a cinema and watch it on a calibrated projector.
Try to open that MXF file in a recent version of VLC and perform the VLC internal snapshot
command, and send that capture over again.

I have good experience with the DigitAll Player on a simple Dell i3 notebook with
integrated graphics. There are, however, different playback quality settings you can
choose. To check smooth DCP playback, try one of the lower quality settings.
Have there been any frame range changes between your source material and the final DCP?
What is the resolution and datarate that you chose when you created the DCP?
For a quick check, try http://www.3dtv.at/Downloads/Index_de.aspx on the MXF video file of
the DCP.

Alec,
I understand that you are storing your content on an SSD, but is it an external drive, or
internal? If it is running off an external, you are limited to the data transfer rate of
your connection, whether that be USB, Thunderbolt, Firewire, or eSATA, and that might not
be enough for you to guarantee a sufficient stream. If it is an internal hard drive
(assuming SATA), you'd have a maximum throughput of either 1.5 Gbps or 3.0 Gbps (no
one ever reaches the upper limits, generally), so at that point, I'd start to look at
other hardware. To be sure, you should never test content from an external drive, just
because of the data transfer rate.
Also, what video card and CPU are you using to view it? On my tablet, such things stutter
a bit, on my work computer, it sometimes has a hiccup, and on my home computer, I'd be
surprised if I couldn't run two simultaneously with no stutter.
I tend to use Stereoscopic Player ( http://3dtv.at/Downloads/Index_en.aspx ) for my
playback needs (I bought mine, but the free version drops out after 5 minutes of playing,
but it's basically enough to ensure that the content looks fine, but the downside is
that it does not work with encrypted content). Oh, Carsten already gave you that link.
Well, I actually use that one, so I can at least endorse it. :)

To QC DCPs, I usually convert them to ProRes in FFMPEG. The resulting
file can be viewed in VLC on a pretty basic computer, or stepped through
frame-by-frame in an editor with scopes, audio meters etc. If there's
judder, you'll see it.

I understand that FFMPEG's colour conversion isn't perfect but in my
experience it's generally good enough to see when something's gone wrong.
I'm Mac and Linux only and so as far as I know, there's no free DCP
player available.
But if anyone thinks this is a bad way to go about it, please say so!
