I’ve been able to compile DCP-o-matic on Raspberry Pi 2’s using the Raspian disk image. I
had to install a few packages and compile/install a couple of third party libraries. I
also had to make some changes to the script file to take into account that the CPU is an
ARM chip, and not Intel x86.
Carl, any chance you’d be willing to take on another platform for your package
distribution? Raspian is a direct Debian implementation, so you should be able to re-use a
lot of your setup.
I’d be willing to donate a configured Pi 2 to the project if that would help.

That sounds like fun. It looks like it's possible to have a Raspbian
chroot on Debian x86 using qemu:

This is really interesting. What kind of performance are you getting
from it?
I have been wondering about if it might be a viable option to make a
kind of render farm out of 20-50 Raspberry Pi, and whether that'd work
out cheaper in terms of processing power per buck than buying one big
fast multi-processor machine.

An inexpensive render farm is exactly why I got DCP-o-matic compiled on the Pi 2.
So far, adding a single Raspberry Pi 2 increased my encode speed by an additional frame
per second. I’m working on adding a second Pi 2, so we’ll see if the performance increase
is linear.
I’m sure I haven’t optimized the compiled code very well, so with some work we could
probably squeeze more performance out of DCP-o-matic.
One benefit I see to using the Pi is that I can easily expand the “farm” one unit at a
time as I can afford it, rather than having to shell out for a single big box. Plus, if
one goes bad, I can easily replace it. If a single big server goes down, my whole render
server is gone.

When you say 1 frame per sec, what format are you encoding from/to? I've
found on a Macbook Pro retina with 2.4Ghz i5 processor, encoding from
1080p ProRes Quicktime to Flat container 2K DCP at 100Mbit, I'm only
getting 2 or 3 frames/sec. So adding another frame/sec for the cost of a
Rasberry Pi would be very good value!

I've run some of the test materials on my own machine (Macbook Pro
Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013, 2.4GHz Intel Core i5).
Big Buck Bunny trailer took 5m04s (2.71fps).
Carl, I've emailed you the log file etc so it can be added to the
benchmarks.
Would be very interested to hear how the Raspberry Pi compares! And
Carsten, do you think I should be getting better performance? It's
running 4 threads (processor has 2 cores hyper-threaded) & DCP-o-matic
is pretty much maxing out the CPU.

Ah, no, sorry. You could try setting thread# to 5 or 6, but with that CPU it will probably
not change too much.
When I browse through my extensive benchmark list, it is sometimes chilling to see how
little actually Intel CPUs have improved over the last years.
I can break down performance to the individual core and hwthread, and at that point,
they're all more or less the same and only scale with clock.
But at least DCP-o-matic will use more cores/machines very effectively.
But to get somewhere, one should start with a decent number. Yes, compared to your Retina,
it may be alluring to shell out 160US$ to get 4fps (if that number holds true). The
problem is that from there adding another 40US$ will gain very little, and the benefit
get's smaller and smaller. So at some point there is little incentive to add just one
PI to get a 10% improvement.
Maybe one can get a dealer to supply a dozen or so PI 2 B for a test. As they need little
to run (SD card, power supply, network cable), this should be rather easy to set up. If a
set of ten scales well enough, it get's interesting.

I would be happy to add a PI-Network.
I have added many more machines during the last year, and also DCP-o-matic improved
it's multicore and network performance considerably since then. The current table
however is not yet ready for primetime ;-)

Can you make an image of your Raspbian setup and give me a link to download it so I can
proceed with some tests on my own?
A deb package would be Ok too ;)
How many threads do you activate on your Pi 2:
dcpomatic_server_cli -t 4 to run 4 threads in parallel.
Did you have a look to some kind of monitoring app like Htop while encoding, to see how
ARM cores react to the load?

There's one shop on ebay germany currently selling the PI 2 B for 34,90€. According to
ebay he sold 159 during the last hour ;-)
I was about to buy the older B+ anyway for an automation device project, but as it seems,
I just bought a PI 2 B which can serve the same purpose.
And yes, If someone would upload a workable image to test DCP-o-matic on it, I would be
happy to test it. I don't know if Carl is interested to have a go on a 'real'
PI himself, I would lend it to him for a while. Maybe Carl is able to weak it a bit
himself if he finds the time for it.

Hi all,

Okay - I will make an offer - if David supplies a downloadable image for the Model II B to
me, I will buy a bunch of these at the quoted price of 35€, test them in a multi-device
environment, then resell them to anyone on this list interested (within europe) for the
same price (and we'll find a deal on low cost shipping).
That way we can get a test going quickly regarding network saturation etc., and wether
it's really worth the effort.
I have a 24port fast HP Gigabit Switch and all the necessary other equipment (power
supplies, USB cables, network cables, etc).
Anyone interested? To get useful numbers, I guess we need at least 5, better 10.
But I think we need to get this going fast, since at that price, supplies won't last

I have a general question about DCPomatic. I could not find in my defaults and settings,
any kind of setting to ensure it is using my extra GPUs when trancoding and rendering.
Does it detect them automatically? or is there a way to configure them. The reason I ask
is because with Davinci Resolve and Premier I had to initially configure them to use my
additional GPUs.

At the moment DCP-o-matic makes no use of GPUs for processing. Various

there is a bug somewhere in it which makes building DCP-o-matic a

That's why it runs at the speed it does. Fair enough. Please keep me informed as to
any update to that. I have rendered a few 4K features and it seems to take about 19 - 24
hours on my system. I could really use it to take advantage of GPU processing to speed it
up. I render 4K features from out of Resolve through my GPUs and for same feature it takes
5 - 6 hours. I am assuming DCPomatic could run as quickly. While running DCPomatic I would
put off rendering other work in fear of bogging down the GPUs' memory, but if it's
not using them...

Hi Tom,
DCP-o-matic is currently using an open-source CPU-only JPEG2000 encoding
library called OpenJPEG. There are some GPU accelerated ones around, but
they are yet to be integrated into DCP-o-matic. I think speed ups of
factors up to 10 or 20 are not out of the question with such approaches.

Did you have a chance to do a test on the official test materials yet?
Carsten - seems like a good idea to test it on 1 PI before buying a job
lot. But if performance does turn out to be economical, I'd be very
happy to buy a few of your test PIs from you. But at the moment it does
look too good to be true!
Does anyone have any guess as to how long it's likely to be before an
open source GPU-accelerated JPEG2000 encoder comes to fruition? That
would probably render this approach obsolete anyway...

Carl will comment on that, but from my conversation with him and what I see on the net
regarding GPU j2k implementations, it may not be too far away.
Some opensource GPU accelerated j2k implementations are already available, but not a full
OPENJPEG port yet.
The problem is, DCI j2k has to follow stringent codestream rules to make sure content can
be played on every cinema server in the world. OPENJPEG has special DCI options to
accomplish that. The existing j2k implementations are not OPENJPEG ports, so currently
they lack these DCI constrained encoding parameters.
Before one of these existing GPU j2k projects can be embedded into DCP-o-matic, codestream
compliance has to be secured. I also think that additional thinking has to go into the
different platforms with their different GPU programing interfaces/models.
I did a lot of benchmarking recently after I received my new xeon machine, I am currently
preparing a longish post on performance optimization and machine selection. That could
help a bit waiting for GPU assisted J2k.

It's difficult to say. I'm tinkering a bit with the Poznan JPEG2000
encoder:
http://apps.man.poznan.pl/trac/jpeg2k
which is CUDA (nvidia). It remains to be seen how easy it is to make it
do cinema-standard encoding. I am no expert on JPEG2000 nor CUDA, so it
may take me a while.
There is also an effort to accelerate OpenJPEG using OpenCL (I think).
That would be great as it would be much easier to integrate into
DCP-o-matic.

I thought about cloud-based encoding before (and actually Carl tested it as well a while
ago with digital ocean). The problem is, you need to supply source footage and receive
compressed footage at a very high speed. Most people will not have the necessary
internet-connection to make this work (and upstream will usually be even slower).
It's certainly interesting to hire a very fast compute machine in the cloud for 2US$
per hour and be impressed by the encoding speed for a short demo snippet - but then to
upload e.g. a 25GByte MKV and receive back 120Gigabyte of DCP - that's a different
thing. Upload and download will take much longer than local encoding on 'decent'
hardware.

No matter how you do it, you still need to send the source video frame out
to a client and receive the encoded data back. Unless you can do that
quicker than encoding the frame locally, there is no point in doing it
remotely. It doesn't scale well, either, as if you are using 100 encoding
servers you would need the bandwidth to transfer data to and from them
all. seti@home and similar things work because they need a lot of CPU but
work on small data blocks.

You should get more than 2-3 fps from a 2.4GHz i5. How many threads have you set in
DCPo's preferences?
Please, do the bunny benchmark, too. If your specific source footage is more complex than
bunny, it could end up on the PI 2 B at 0.5fps...

Hmm, at first I found it hard to believe a Pi is able to do 1fps (whatever content that is
referenced to). However, when I look up the specs for the Pi 2 B, it is actually a
QuadCore ARM7 running at 900MHz, and it seems it also has just enough RAM for the render
client.
I did extensive benchmarking on a large range of machines, with the idea to find sweet
spots in the price/performance ratio of different old and new machines. I thought I just
found one in the form of second hand Xeon machines/CPUs.
What is your base machine/Master feeding the PI ?.
Would you try the 'official' benchmark, BigBuck Bunny from here:

It will only take a few minutes to complete. Please do it one time without the PI 2 B,
then delete everything except log and metadata, and do it again with the Pi 2
connected/running.
Then post the log.
A PI 2 B currently sells just below 40€/US$. That would be 10 fps at, maybe 450€/US$,
including power supply (old PC PSU) and network stuff. That isn't much more than
possible with traditional hardware, but with a bit of tweaking and reduced prices for
larger quantities, it could become interesting. And maybe at some point there will be a
slightly cheaper PI 2 B compute module as well...
But, again, I still doubt that it will actually do 1-Bunny-fps. The J2k is very dependent
on footage, resolution and compression rate, so we really need a stable reference in order
to do fair comparisons.
We had discussions on network saturation using large numbers of clients on this list a few
times. 100MBit/s Ethernet is not enough, and the PI 2 B does max out at 100MBit/s, and who
knows how much real world MByte/s that really comes down to.
However, as the PI 2 B is only capable of 1fps anyway (potentially), through a 1GBit
Switch, a gigabit ethernet master could still feed 15-20 of them without saturating
it's own Gigabit connection. Could work up until 15-20fps/PIs. DCP-o-matic saturates
gigabit ethernet around 15-20 remote fps.
What I currently consider as the sweet spot is 6.7-bunny-fps from a second hand 380-420€
Xeon hexcore 5660 machine that comes with everything it needs to run, except a monitor to
set it up. You can double that into 12-bunny-fps if you buy a dual-cpu machine for a few
bucks more. I just did that and it comes out at around 550-600€ with dual xeon 5660. That
is around 46€ per bunny-fps. Pretty close to the hypothetical PI 2 B render farm already.
What bothers the hell out of me is that a 40€ PI 2 B could have the performance of a
single xeon core running at 2.8GHz... ;-)
Again, I doubt it, but I would be happy to admit I'm in error...
BTW - I just tested FinalDCP with the Kakadu-Turbo-J2k-Encoder on this Xeon machine, and
it spits out 32fps average on the bunny footage. Wow...
Will test it on the dual-xeon machine as soon as possible. What about porting the Kakadu
encoder to the PI 2 B? It costs some money, though, but so do the Pies...

- libswscale => Ok
- libswresample => Ok after adding deb-multimedia repository to solve all relative
dependencies

- libdcp => not found
I'm trying to recompile libdcp to install it, but at the moment, I get an error with
libopenjpeg not found in pkg-config search path.
I've already installed libopenjpeg-dev latest package available in raspbian repo.

Please checkout dcpomatic from git (if you haven't already) with
git clone git://git.carlh.net/git/dcpomatic.git
then configure it with
./waf configure --target-arm
and whatever other options you are using. I just added the
--target-arm option to fix the problem you are seeing.

Then I needed to add wheezy backports repo to get wxWidgets 3.0 to finish configure step.
Just launched build, Pi2 CPU is starting to burn with 4x100% threads ;)

Bad news concerning build on RPi2: process always aborted with errors.
It seems that RPi2 has not enough power to handle the job.
At start, I see all 4 cores going up to 100%, then after a while, memory gets full
starting swapping. This makes CPU activity going down and finally process halts showing
error messages. :(

I'm trying to recompile libdcp to install it, but at the moment, I get an error with
libopenjpeg not found in pkg-config search path.
I've already installed libopenjpeg-dev latest package available in raspbian repo.

Please checkout dcpomatic from git (if you haven't already) with
git clone git://git.carlh.net/git/dcpomatic.git
then configure it with
./waf configure --target-arm
and whatever other options you are using. I just added the
--target-arm option to fix the problem you are seeing.

I don't know how to force 1 core only...
By the way, I'm trying to build again without network connected and it seems to work
better. I only get warnings about "swp{b} use is deprecated for ARMv6 and
ARMv7".
Yet another idea: we will not use RPi2 to encode DCPs as a master computing node, only as
an encoding server. Would it be possible to modify compilation scripts to process the
relevant source files only?

processing thread to see if the memory usage remains stable?

Your customized version of openjpeg is Ok.
Then I needed to add wheezy backports repo to get wxWidgets 3.0 to finish configure step.
Just launched build, Pi2 CPU is starting to burn with 4x100% threads ;)

Yes, I can do that. You can ./waf configure with --disable-gui which gets
close (it only builds the CLI programs and none of the GUI code).

Hi,
Bad news concerning build on RPi2: process always aborted with errors.
It seems that RPi2 has not enough power to handle the job.
At start, I see all 4 cores going up to 100%, then after a while,
memory gets
full starting swapping. This makes CPU activity going down
and finally
process halts showing error messages. :(
Disappointing...

Configure finished :)
Your customized version of openjpeg is Ok.
Then I needed to add wheezy backports repo to get wxWidgets 3.0 to
finish
configure step.
Just launched build, Pi2 CPU is starting to burn with 4x100% threads ;)

1. Brilliant work on trying to get this working. It's potentially of massive benefit
to us all, so thanks for pursuing it.
2. Was the failure you hit during compiling the code, or on doing a DCP encode?

Maybe there's a bug with DCP-o-matic on ARM... can you try with 1
processing thread to see if the memory usage remains stable?

you had to do something in the code and asked me to specify "--target-arm" to
get configure passed.

sudo ./waf configure --disable-gui --target-arm => Ok
sudo ./waf build --disable-gui => in progress

It seems that up to 3 cores, processing build is Ok. May be only 2 cores is more secure as
3 makes memory getting a bit high, even if it seems to stay behind the 1G limit.
4 cores is for sure too much for the Pi.
A few more questions (as for compiling, I'm a noob...):
- do I need to specify again "--target-arm" for the build process?
- how can I flush the previous build process to start again with a clean setup?

takes to build, and won't affect the speed of the DCP-making process

Yup. Should compile/use the standard cli render-node only and use the -t option and see
how much memory is needed for different thread numbers.

I've proceeded 2 runs on 3 cores. Things go relatively smoother and even faster than
before (sic...).
I.e: 3x100% CPU and memory goes up to >800M but never reached 1G. Power reaches a hudge
3W...!
I can still access the Pi thru SSH to run htop. Much better...
I now see only 128 elements to build with "--disable-gui" option, which makes
about 30% less work to achieve assuming all files need the same delay to be built.
I still get a lot of warnings about swp{b} deprecated for ARMv6 & 7.
And finally, build went twice to 23/128 (ffmpeg_content) but failed each time at this
point.
Carl, can I post log files in order for you to see what's going on? what file(s)??

Hi Fred,
That's a FFmpeg version that DCP-o-matic is not expecting. I think Debian
still package libav rather than FFmpeg. The best thing is probably to
fetch FFmpeg git:
git clone git://source.ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg.git
and then build it with something like
cd ffmpeg
./configure --enable-gpl --enable-postproc --enable-shared --disable-static
make
sudo make install
The .debs that I make for Debian/Ubuntu (sadly) statically link to FFmpeg
because of this situation.

Latest news:
It seems that up to 3 cores, processing build is Ok. May be only 2
cores is more secure as 3 makes memory getting a bit high, even if it
seems to stay behind the 1G limit.
4 cores is for sure too much for the Pi.
A few more questions (as for compiling, I'm a noob...):
- do I need to specify again "--target-arm" for the build process?
- how can I flush the previous build process to start again with a
clean setup?

to only use 1 core.
I'll try this as soon as build fails...
Concerning Boost, I don't remember exactly where I got this packages.
But I know that you had to do something in the code and asked me to
specify "--target-arm" to get configure passed.
I'm starting a new test following your latest instructions:
sudo ./waf configure --disable-gui --target-arm => Ok
sudo ./waf build --disable-gui => in progress

While trying to make one DCP from many still images + many folders
containing image sequences,
there is an issue :
images (from folders) are not displayed in their initial sequence !
I've first thought it was relative to mixed content so I've also tried
with only one folder (containing ten images in sequence) but still the
same issue.
I've then tested with newer version of dcp-o-matic2 (from 2.1.19 →
2.1.21) but not better, on two machines (both Ubuntu 14.04).
Maybe problems come from the "pattern" I use to name my files ?
In one folder I have
1_01.tif
1_02.tif
1_03.tif
and so on…
Other folder is
2_01.tif
2_02.tif
2_03.tif
and so on…
Fourth folder is
4_01.tif
4_02.tif
4_03.tif
and so on…
You would guess for the sixth and seventh folder ;-)
Those sequences are 6 to 18 images serving as transitions/animations
between still images.

I've successfully made my DCP with exactly the same material in
dcp-o-matic-1.79
So is the file names pattern really to blame ?

One suggestion about UI in v2 : a way to resize the content window ?
Maybe to pan it vertically to bottom as number of contents can grow ?
The "tabs" in lower part do not need so much room - except for audio.
I'll try to do a mock-up.

Indeed v2.1.23 solved the issue with image sequences.
There is now maybe something unexpected with previewing :
if arrows are used to play frame by frame, you can go "above" last picture…
And time/number of frames may not be right.

One suggestion about UI in v2 : a way to resize the content window ? Maybe to pan it
vertically to bottom as number of contents can grow ? The "tabs" in

Good news today...
DCP-o-matic server is up and running on my Raspberry Pi 2 :)
(see attached .png)
Compiling FFmpeg was a pain, and then DCPomatic took less than 30mn to build, compiling on
3 legs.
I've still got a complain at start: "failed to load configuration (XML file does
not exist)"
Is this mandatory, doctor?
I'm now going to settle a small test LAN with a master PC and the Pi.
First step: encoding the Bunny on master alone, then adding the Pi for a second run and
see if it makes a difference.
A link to the reference asset used to benchmark DCP-o-matic would be appreciated.

Hi Fred,
That's a FFmpeg version that DCP-o-matic is not expecting. I think Debian
still package libav rather than FFmpeg. The best thing is probably to
fetch FFmpeg git:
git clone git://source.ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg.git
and then build it with something like
cd ffmpeg
./configure --enable-gpl --enable-postproc --enable-shared --disable-static
make
sudo make install
The .debs that I make for Debian/Ubuntu (sadly) statically link to FFmpeg
because of this situation.

then send the file "log" that should contain it.

I've proceeded 2 runs on 3 cores. Things go relatively smoother and even faster than
before (sic...).
I.e: 3x100% CPU and memory goes up to >800M but never reached 1G. Power reaches a
hudge 3W...!
I can still access the Pi thru SSH to run htop. Much better...
I now see only 128 elements to build with "--disable-gui" option, which makes
about 30% less work to achieve assuming all files need the same delay to be built.
I still get a lot of warnings about swp{b} deprecated for ARMv6 & 7.
And finally, build went twice to 23/128 (ffmpeg_content) but failed each time at this
point.
Carl, can I post log files in order for you to see what's going on? what file(s)??

cores is more secure as 3 makes memory getting a bit high, even if it
seems to stay behind the 1G limit.
4 cores is for sure too much for the Pi.
A few more questions (as for compiling, I'm a noob...):
- do I need to specify again "--target-arm" for the build process?
- how can I flush the previous build process to start again with a
clean setup?

But I know that you had to do something in the code and asked me to
specify "--target-arm" to get configure passed.

Please also check different -t settings for the encode server and check with top/htop for
CPU and memory usage. Hopefully it is possible to load the PI2 with all 4 cores during
encoding without memory issues.

It's time for a first feedback on DCP-o-matic encoding on a slave Raspberry Pi 2
server.
My setup:
- cheap PC as master (Pentium G3430 - 2 cores @3.30Ghz - 4GB RAM), Passmark 3437, Ubuntu
14.10 + DCP-o-matic
- Mikrotik RB750up router, using only 100M ports and closed LAN.
- RPi2 with Raspbian Wheezy + custom DCP-o-matic ARM server nogui homebrew (thanks Carl).
- Monitoring tools: Htop on the Pi & Ubuntu system monitor on PC
BB Bunny asset bench:
- PC alone = 5mn15 => 2.62 fr/s
- PC + Pi (4 cores) = 4mn28 => 3.08 fr/s
- PC + Pi (4 cores) + logging on Pi = 4mn45
- PC + Pi (4 cores) + monitoring = 4mn37
- PC + Pi (3 cores) + monitoring = 4mn44
I did the last test because I saw less than 15Mb/s peaks on network, which made me think
that Pi didn't fully handled networking load (like when compiling...). In fact, Bunny
frames are small and the bottleneck is on Pi CPU, not networking.
Comments: it seems that this setup is performing better than most 4 cores listed

Sintel asset bench:
- PC alone = 3h18mn30 => 1.87 fr/s
- PC + Pi (4 cores) = 2h51mn29 => 2.17 fr/s
On these calculations, I exclude intro and final checksums which last longer than with
Bunny asset.
Networking never went more than 50Mb/s. So no need for gigabit LAN.
RPi2 RAM never top up, staying behind 900M. No need for hudge RAM too on the PC. It stayed
below 1G.
RPi2 CPU did get really hot while running at 400% during hours, but no burnout, so no need
for a heatsink.
Power stayed behind 4W.
Comments: RPi2 handles 0.30 frame per second, roughly 1 frame every 3 seconds and 4 frames
in 12 seconds. This is quite the pattern that I noticed on networking graphes.
It looks like adding roughly 1.5 more core on my PC (?).
See attached two screen captures of RPi2 htop monitoring and PC monitoring while encoding
(sorry, my computers mainly speaks French).
I'll send all logs to Carl tomorrow.

You need three to four PI2s to get into the performance range of an old, second hand
2-3GHz office machine. This doesn't make sense economically.

I've also benchmarked Sintel encoding with a Xeon E3-1220v2 server as master (4 cores
@3.5Ghz turbo mode) + RPi2 slave.
Gain is only 5 minutes less on a 1h40mn job, which makes only 0.17 fps for the RPi2...
I'm curious to learn more about the first guy who mentionned on this list +1 fps while
encoding with his RPi2...

indicate a performance problem, and there may be flags we can pass to GCC
to improve OpenJPEG performance on ARM. It may be difficult to justify
